Night of the Proms 2001
Als het concept van Night of the Proms iemand op het lijf geschreven is, dan is het wel Meat Loaf. De muziek en de stem van deze lijvige Amerikaan lenen zich perfect voor een live-uitvoering met een groot orkest.
Met Meat Loaf staat een heuse theaterman op het podium. Hij begon zijn carrière in diverse bandjes en met een rol in de musical "Hair". Zijn debuut op het witte doek maakte hij in 1975 met "The Rocky Horror Picture Show", de verfilming van de (bijna) gelijknamige musicalproductie. Twee jaar later werd hij wereldberoemd met zijn theatrale ablum "Bat Out Of Hell", resultaat van een samenwerking met songwriter Jim Steinman. Mede door de overweldigende hitsingle "Paradise By The Dashboard Light", de bijbehorende videoclip en de indrukwekkende live-optredens van Meat Loaf werd "Bat Out Of Hell" één van de best verkopende albums uit de muziekgeschiedenis.
Meat Loaf was in heel wat films te zien (het voorbije decennium o.m. in "Wayne’s World", "The Mighty", "Crazy in Alabama" en "Fight Club"). Op muzikaal vlak zorgde een breuk met Steinman ervoor dat zijn latere albums in de schaduw bleven van "Bat Out Of Hell" en de opvolger "Dead Ringer". Tot in 1993 "Boat Out Of Hell II" verscheen. De plooien Steinman waren duidelijk gladgestreken. De hit "I’d Do Anything For Love (But I Won’t Do That)", met alweer een indrukwekkende videoclip, leverde Meat Loaf een Grammy Award op als "Best Rock Vocal". Het succes werd in 1995 herhaald met het album "Welcome To The Neighbourhood".

If the Night of the Proms concept was made for one artist, it’s Meat Loaf. The music and voice of this bulky American are perfectly suited for a live performance with a large orchestra.
With Meat Loaf a real theatre-man is on stage. He started his career in various bands and with a role in the musical "Hair". He made his debut on the silver screen with 1975’s "The Rocky Horror Picture Show", an adaptation of the (almost) identically named musical. Two years later he became world-famous with his theatrical "Bat Out Of Hell" album, the result of a collaboration with songwriter Jim Steinman. In the musical realm, a split with Steinman was the reason that later albums would remain in the shadow of "Bat Out Out Of Hell" and it’s follow-up "Dead Ringer". Until "Bat Out Of Hell II" was released in 1993. The wrinkles with Steinman were clearly ironed out. The hit single "I’d Do Anything For Love ("But I Won’t Do That)", with again an impressive video, earned Meat Loaf a Grammy Award for "Best Rock Vocal".
