(I'D LOVE TO BE) AS HEAVY AS JESUS
Boy :
I don't want to do nothing or say nothing
That will ever, ever hurt nobody
Girl:
And I don't want to get nothing for doing something
'Till I give something to somebody
Boy :
I just want to rise above, above that devil's claw
And see God in every single man
Girl:
I just want to spread joy like that little boy
Who once walked, walked this promised land
Both:
And I'd love to be as heavy as Jesus
And I'd love to be as heavy as Jesus
Boy :
I just gotta be someone, oh free someone
Lord, he loves everybody
Girl:
And I've just got to feel something, a real something
Deep down inside for somebody
Boy :
I'll never satisfy, oh, this inner cry
Until I give my everything
Girl:
Oh, and I will live my whole life through just helping you and you
For the joy, for the joy that it will bring
Both:
And I'd love to be as heavy as Jesus
And I'd love to be as heavy as Jesus
(heavy as Jesus) Oh heavy as Jesus
(heavy as Jesus) Oh Lord now, heavy now
(heavy as Jesus) Oh heavy as Jesus
(heavy as Jesus) Oh now
(heavy as Jesus Christ)
(heavy as Jesus Christ)
(heavy as Jesus Christ)
And I'd love to be as heavy as Jesus
And I'd love to be as heavy as Jesus
And I'd love to be as heavy as Jesus
And I'd love to be as heavy as Jesus....
SHE WAITS BY THE WINDOW
Girl:
She waits by the window
To see if love is near
Her head on the pillow
She yields to tears
Boy : Oooh
Girl:
Standing in front of your light
Nothing is turning out right
Nothing comes out from inside
Nothing is turning out right, ooh yeah
Boy :
She waits at the window
To see her tears
She's asking the question
Why he's not here it isn't clear
Standing in front of your light
Nothing is turning out right
Girl:
Nothing comes out from inside
Nothing is turning out right
Boy : Oooh
Girl:
Standing in front of your line
Nothing is turning out right
Nothing for her is in sight
Nothing is turning out right
Boy : Oooh
Both:
She waits at the window
To see if love is near
She's asking the question
Why he's not here it isn't clear
She's waiting and waiting
And waiting and waiting
She waits at the window
She waits at the window
Aaaaaah
Aaaaaah....
IT TAKES ALL KINDS OF PEOPLE
Boy :
You know God in all of his wisdom
Paints the pretty flowers that you see
Girl:
Tell me about it
You know he made them all of different
Girl, just like you and me
Girl:
Now listen to me
Don't that tell you something boy?
It's heavy, but that's how it's gotta be
What's good enough for God almighty
It's good enough for you and me
Both:
You know it takes all, all kinds of people
The young, old, and the rich and the poor
It takes all, all kinds of people
Everybody's got to give a little bit more
Boy :
I don't care if you got no money
'Cause money's just a means to an end
But when you're cold and lonely
Girl, you're gonna cry, cry up all dreams
Girl:
But your love, with love—with love for each other boy
We can get down to where we're feeling free
Every man, woman and child
I'll bet ya will live in love and harmony
Both:
Together
Together
You know it takes all, all kinds of people
The young, old, and the rich and the poor
It takes all, all kinds of people
Everybody's got to give a little bit more
It takes all, all kinds of people
The young, old and the rich and the poor
It takes all, all kinds of people
Everybody's got to give a little bit more....
(fade)
GAME OF LOVE
Girl:
You got that certain something
That really turns me on
You can make me do right
Or you can make me do wrong
If you really mean
That I'm the best thing you've ever found
You can prove it by being true
And never playing around
But just like you can cheat on me
(just—like you can cheat)
I can cheat on you
(I can cheat on you)
Ain't no rules
This is a game of love
Can't be played by two
You can go shopping in the streets
Trying to bargain up something new
But what's out there for you men
Oh it's out there for us women too
Like a dog that prowls around
Prowls around and licks at his bone
If the shoe don't fit the size
Why keep trying it on?
But just like you can cheat on me
(just—like you can cheat)
I can cheat on you
(I can cheat on you)
Ain't no rules
This is a game of love
Can't be played by two
Like the old saying of give and take
You're never too old to learn (learn)
But when you start putting your hand in the fire
You know you're going to get burned (burned)
Let me tell you if you do unto me
As I do unto you (you)
There ain't no chance for this romance
To ever be broken in two
Cause just like you can cheat on me
I can cheat on you (I can cheat on you)
Ain't no rules, this is a game of love
Can't be played by two
You see I've been hurt so many times
But somehow I've pulled through
But the stakes of love are much too high
For me to gamble with you
You know I'm not playing hard to get
But I want you to understand
If you wanna do right woman
Oh you've gotta be a do right man
But just like you can cheat on me
(just—like you can cheat)
I can cheat on you
(I can cheat on you)
Ain't no rules
This is a game of love
Can't be played by two
If you wanna do right woman
You gotta come on in and do right
See—I'll play if you want to play
Oh that's what it's all about
Everybody's talking about liberation
Oh I don't believe
But I believe in a man doing right
Oh everything a woman does new
But just like you can cheat on me
(just—like you can cheat)
I can cheat on you
(I can cheat on you)
Ain't no rules
This is a game of love
Can't be played by two
You wanna to do right woman
You gotta come on in and do right
See I'll play you if you wanna play
Oh that's what it's all about
Everybody's talking about liberation
I don't believe
But I believe in a man doing right
Everything a woman does new....
KISS ME AGAIN
Boy :
Yes it's getting very late
Honey please don't make me wait
Kiss me again
Girl:
You know I'm so in love with you
That I don't know what to do
Baby
Kiss me again
Both:
Kiss me again
Every time I see you
Boy : Oh now honey
Sensation fills my soul
Boy : Don't you know
How I'd love to have you
And I'm never gonna let you go....
Girl:
Let me whisper in your ear
Now the time is drawing near
Baby
Both:
Kiss me again
Kiss me again
Every time I see you
Boy : Darlin' ev'ry time
Sensation in my soul
Boy : In my soul
How I'd love to hold you
And I'm never gonna let you go....
WHAT YOU SEE IS WHAT YOU GET
Boy :
There ain't no hidden treasure
In this pot of gold, you see:
Ain't no way you're going to make
No silky purse outta me
Girl:
Well I'm never ever gonna change your ways
I'll take you as you are
But you got something that I want
And that's one way to go
Both:
What you see is what you get
And you ain't seen nothing yet
What you see is what you get
And you ain't seen nothing yet
Boy :
Yeah, I told you that I loved ya
Right from the very start
Now don't you make me sorry girl
That'll open up my heart
Girl:
Well I know that I'm no angel
Can say my first time out
But you can count on what I've got
'Cause what I've got's a lot—don't you know:
Both:
What you see is what you get
And you ain't seen nothing yet (baby baby baby)
What you see is what you get
And you ain't seen nothing yet (how ya doin' now?)
Girl:
When it's cold I want it hot
I've always wanted what it's not
But when it comes to loving you
I'm yours no matter what you do
Boy :
Oh, you're my baby and I'm your man
This is not an angel's plan
Girl:
You're not too skinny—not too fat
Loving you is where it's at
Both:
What you see is what you get
And you ain't seen nothing yet (baby baby baby)
What you see is what you get
And you ain't seen nothing yet....
(repeat and fade)
SUNSHINE (WHERE'S HEAVEN)
Boy :
Smell of freshness in the air
Of grass and flowers blooming everywhere
Oh lord it's spring, but I just don't care
Girl:
It only, you know it only makes me cry
Knowing that our love is gone
Oh god it makes me want to die
Both:
Sunshine
Sunshine, where's heaven?
Sunshine, tell me
Sunshine, where's heaven?
Boy :
I know that what you've lost brings you pain
But darling try, try not to cry
Some day we'll be together again
Girl:
I know the Lord
I know the Lord must have his way
He blessed us twice with love
Then he took, took one away
Both:
Sunshine
Sunshine, where's heaven?
Sunshine, tell me
Sunshine, where's heaven?
Boy :
Playgrounds and swings
The sandbox where she used to play
Remembering her castles, her play
Oh Lord she was my sunshine, bless her
Girl:
And her dirty little fingers mould
The fantasies she had that day
Ooh, the parts she played
That was my sunshine
Both:
Sunshine, tell us—where's heaven?
Sunshine, tell us—where's heaven?
Sunshine, tell us—where's heaven?
Sunshine, tell us—where's heaven....
JIMMY BELL
Boy :
Jimmy Bell's in town
Walking all around
He's got some dreams himself
And some other good stuff now babe
Bring your man to see it now honey, oohw
Jimmy Bell's in the pulpit
Bible in his hand
Good lord now
Three sisters in the corner cryin'
Jimmy Bell's my man now babe
Jimmy Bell's my man, aaahw
Jimmy Bell calls the sexton
Come and toll your bell for me
Cause there's
Some of these old members here
Don't you know

Jimmy Bell calls the children
Won't you bring your sins to me?
Oh, five dollars here, you know

LADY BE MINE
Boy :
Come and sit beside me now
Understand that I'm your man
I'll do what I can
Come and sit beside me now
Let me rest my weary head
On the foot of your bed
I got to have your tender touch
Give me the strength that I need so much
Oh lady, lady be mine
Girl:
Well I'm sick and I'm wondering
What the future holds for me
Do you know what I mean
Now I'm staring in the clearing
But I wish my eyes could see, oh yeah
So right now I must confess
All I can do is guess
And I've got to have your love to comfort me
Both:
Oh lady, lady be mine
Be my love, lady be mine
Be my love, lady be mine
Be my love, lady be mine
Boy :
I've got to have your tender touch
Girl:
Give me the strength that I need so much
And I've got to have your love to comfort me....
Both:
Come and stay beside me now
Girl:
Hold me tight and don't let go, oh no
Both:
Come and lay beside me now
Boy :
Cause tomorrow I might go, don't you know
Girl:
I've got to have your tender touch
Boy :
Give me the strength that I need so much
Oh lady, lady be mine
Be my lady, lady be mine
Be my love, lady be mine
Boy : Oh lady, lady be mine
Both: Be my love, lady be mine
Girl: Oh I'm your lady, lady be mine

Boy :
Reaching out to touch the sky
Girl:

Girl:

Both:
Jessica White—won't you stay with me a while?
Jessica White—won't you stay with me a while?
Jessica White—won't you stay with me a while?
With me a while
Jessica smile with me a while
Boy :

Girl:

With me a while
Jessica smile with me a while
Jessica smile with me a while
Jessica smile with me a while....
QUOTES
In the archives of SoulfulDetroit.com you can find a heap of comments on the Stoney and Meatloaf album by producer Ralph Terrana.
Scorpion played on about half the album and the rest were the Funk Brothers. I guess I pretty much covered my bases when it came to the tracks huh? As far as my playing, I really wasn't doing much but laying in some backing chords but I'm glad you approve.Ralph Terrana
Thank you for furnishing the entire track on " Kiss Me Again" . Sure brought back some memories. Basically what we have there is Scorpion ( Babbitt, Andrew Smith, Ray Monette, Mike ( Crazy Mike ) Campbell ) with Stony and Meatloaf along with a Dave Van DePitte string arrangement. Ray...is that me on the B-3 towards the end? Do you remember? I don't.Ralph Terrana
I'm sure you've all been starting to notice the name Mike Campbell in the various threads. He was with Babbitt in Scorpion and he was a very talented writer. He also could be a little unusual. We called him Crazy Mike. I first met him wen he started hanging around Tera Shirma. He was young and cocky.During those days he started to learn to play harmonica. He would tell me he was going to be the best harmonica player in Detroit. I'm thinking..." Yeah...right kid " And he did just that. Anytime a harmonica was needed on a session, Mike got the call. I would even use him a few years down the road on the Stoney and Meatloaf album. If you are familiar with the song on the album..Lady Be Mine...that's Mike playing.Ralph Terrana
Stone Heart and Leader of the People were produced by Nick Zesses and Dino Fakaris. Everthing Under The Sun was potentally a good song that I produced badly. I'm embarrassed that it got released.Ralph Terrana
Everything Under The Sun had a lot of problems. For one...the horns were all wrong. My fault. I told arranger Dave Van DePitte I wanted horns. What I should have told him was I wanted a New Orleans kind of bluesy horn section. Instead I got a marching band. Again, I take the responsibility for NOT sitting down with Dave and be more specific. Also the mix....It's terrible. Neither Russ nor I mixed this song. Also the song was never really finished. I think the horn section took the wind out of my sails and I couldn't figure a way to slip another horn session in for the song. You live, you learn.Ralph Terrana
As far as the credits on the S&M album...sometimes these repackaging deals get the facts wrong. Mike re-confirmed for me ..we did not do ..The Way You Do THe Things You DoRalph Terrana
Stoney and Meatloaf's What You See IS What You Get....Betty Osea...head of A&R wanted it for the Supremes. When I heard this I blew my stack and stormed into Harry Balk's office. Harry smoothed me out and assured me it was my call where the song went.I never sang on any of the S&M stuff, but I did play some keyboards...such as Hammond B3 on Heavy As Jesus.Ralph Terrana
The place wasn't all that unusual. I had written the changes to a song I was calling Sunshine ( Where Are You Going ). I didn't have lyrics for it yet but I was assuming it was turning into some sort of love song. In fact R Dean Taylor heard the initial track and wanted to do the song once it was written. However I had earmarked it for Stoney and Meatloaf who I was recording along with Russ and Mike Valvano. One afternoon at my home Mike and I were kicking the track around and we noticed my very young daughter Alisa playing in the backyard.
I don't know how it happened but the song gets turned into a couple singing about a young daughter that died and gets re-titled Sunshine ( Where Are You Going ). Once completed I could barely get myself to listen to the thing. Stony, who was pregnant at the time of recording, would break into tears while trying to sing her parts. Fortunatly the little girl is now a 35 year old woman happily married with a family of her own so all worked out well. I'll never write another song like that again though.Ralph Terrana
Meatloaf and I were very close. Every Friday night he and his then girl friend Jill,( who we referred to as "bears' due to the fact that during a recording session one night she gave Meat a Hall's cough drop to sooth his throat.Well the things are so strong they make your eyes water, so Meat said " Damn Jill these things are bears ) would come to my house to spend the evening. Meat loved to play board games and he would come in with games SO obscure,I never quite knew where he found them. A board game and two packages of candy. Meat was a very bright guy...he would quickly read the directions to the game....explain the rules to us and we'd play until the wee hours of the morning. There was a time I was starting to receive a little pressure from some of the higher ups at Motown to dump Meatloaf and concentrate on Stoney. I wouldn't do it. Meat was my friend AND I believed in him.
I felt SOOO vindicated when "Bat Out Of Hell" took off for him after his Motown days. He's a great guy and no one works harder than Meatloaf.Ralph Terrana
Scorpion and Funk Brother bassist Bob Babbitt has also something to say:
I did not know Todd Rundgren...but Meatloaf was a friend of mine and personally called me to play on the "Bat Out Of Hell" album that Todd produced.....the dates for the recording were dates I had already booked in toronto for a Alice Cooper album and I could not do the Meatloaf album......Bob Babbitt
