Tape, recorded in New York on Aug. 28, 1973, containing various song tracks written by Jim Steinman for the New York Shakespeare Festival musical production of More Than You Deserve. Unearthed by bellminer from the New York Public Library in 2011.
"Water Seller’s Song", "Smoke Song" and "Song of the Gods" are from an adaptation of the Bertold Brecht play Good Woman of Szechuan, for which Jim wrote the music. "Song of the Gods" was later reused in Neverland, and in Tanz der Vampire as "Ewigkeit".
"Souvenirs", once the title track of the musical, was cut from the show.

Water Seller’s Song

Water, water, buy my water
Oh oh oh, oh oh oh
Water, water, buy my water
Stand up you dogs and
Buy my water, water, water
Oh oh oh, oh oh oh
Water, water, buy my water
Stand up you dogs and buy!

Buy my water, I am yelling
And my fury I’m restraining
For no water I am selling
‘Cause it’s raining, ‘cause it’s raining
I keep yelling, buy my water
But of course there’s no one buying
Throats not thirsty, throats not choking
No one’s paying, no one’s buying

Water!
Stand up you dogs and buy my water!
Stand up you fools and buy my water!
Stand up you dogs and buy my water, water, water, water, water, water, water!
Stand up all you mangy dogs and buy!

If I could only plug the hole up
Last night I dreamed the clouds went dry
Seven years without a shower
And not a raindrop in the sky

I can hear them shrieking
Water!

Can’t you them shrieking, water?
All pretending they adore me
They will go down on their knees
Down up on their knees before me

Peasants! Down on your knees and beg for water!
Fools! Down on your knees and beg for water!
Idiots! Down on your knees and beg for water!
Beg for water, beg for water, beg for water!

Banish all the other gods
But me! Me, me, me, me, me

What are lawns and hedges thinking?
What are fields and forests saying?
At the cloud’s breast we are drinking
And we do not care who’s paying

Paying, paying
Buying, buying
Choking, choking
Dying for my…

Water, water, buy my water
Oooohhhauuugh!
Buy my water, water, water
Stand up you dogs and
Buy my water, water, water
Oooohhhauuugh-ha!
Buy my water, water, water
I beg of you
Please buy! …

Smoke Song

I used to think before my old age beset me
That brains could fill the pantries of the poor
But where did all my expectations get me?
I’m just as hungry
I’m just as hungry
As hungry as I was before!

Tell me brother, what’s the use?
Tell me what’s the use
See the smoke floating free
See the smoke floating free
Floating into ever colder coldness
It’s just the same, the same with me
It’s just the same, the same with me
It’s just the same, the same with me
It’s so cold
And it’s so cold!

I used to think after she went away and left me
That she was nothing but a used-up whore
But where did all my masturbation get me?
I’m just as hungry
I’m just as hungry
As hungry as I was before!

The straight and narrow path leads to disaster
And so the crooked path I tried to tread
That got me to disaster even faster
They say we’ll be hungry
They say we’ll be hungry
They say we’ll be hungry when we’re dead!

Tell me brother, what’s the use? Hmm-mm
See the smoke floating free
Floating into ever colder coldness
It’s just the same, the same with me
You know it’s just the same with me
It’s just the same, the same with me
It’s so cold, it’s so cold! …

Mmm, you older people filled with expectation
Any moment now you’ll walk the plank
The future’s for the younger generation
Even if the future
Even if the future
And even if the future is a blank!

Tell me brother, what’s the use?
Tell me what’s the use
See the smoke floating free
Oh, so
Floating into ever colder coldness
It’s just the same, the same with me
You know it’s just the same with me
It’s just the same, the same with me
Ooh
It’s just the same with me!

Female vocals: Tell me brother, what’s the use?
See the smoke floating free
Floating into ever colder coldness
It’s just the same, the same with me
It’s just the same, the same with me
It’s just the same, the same with me-hee-hee!

Floating into ever colder coldness
It’s so cold
Floating into ever colder coldness
It’s so cold
Floating into ever colder, ever colder
It’s so cold
So cold
Don’t you know it’s cold
Floating into ever colder coldness
It’s so cold
Oh so cold, ever colder coldness
Ooh
Floating into ever colder coldness
And it’s so cold
Floating into ever colder coldness....

Golden Egg

Once upon a time there lived a pretty princess
Her eyes were blue as the sea
And deep inside her body was a golden egg
So the prince he did decree:

Any man around who thinks he can discover
Where the golden egg does lie
I will make him a wealthy man

And the crowd, they did reply:

Who can find the golden
I can find the golden, find the golden egg
Who can find the golden
I can find the golden, find the golden egg

Who can find the golden
I can find the golden, find the golden egg
Who can find the golden
I can find the golden, find the golden egg

A humble artist was the first to volunteer
With a paintbrush in his hand
And he stuck the paintbrush in the royal body
But it made the princess mad

The next volunteer he was a baker man
He had a roller for his bread
But the princess said when he’d finished his search
I want … the baker dead

Next with a broom on a wooden handle
Came the cleaner of the streets
And he leaned on the handle with all of his weight
Till the princess bled on the sheets

Next came a barber with a barber pole
Which he dragged along on the ground
And he rammed the pole in the princess’ hole
But the egg … it couldn’t be found

Dig a little faster, dig a little deeper
Dig it, dig it in
Gotta be done before the darkness comes
And the night is moving in

Ram it in, jam it in
Jam it in, jam it in, find that golden egg
Ram it in, jam it in
Jam it in, jam it in, find that golden egg

Ram a little faster, ram a little deeper
Ram it, ram it in
Gotta be done before the darkness comes
And the night is moving in

Suddenly a hush came over the crowd
And a voice arose from the din
And there with a rifle and a bayonet
Stood a soldier grinning a grin

He sliced the princess with his bayonet
From her crotch to her sea blue eyes
Then he stuck his thumb in the royal tum
And he pulled, he pulled out the prize

Aniah hoon niah, aniah hoon niah
Aniah hoonah hoonah ayo
Aniah hoon niah, aniah hoon niah
Aniah hoonah hoonah ayo

Aniah hoon niah, aniah hoon niah
Aniah hoonah hoonah ayo
Aniah hoon niah, aniah hoon niah
Aniah hoonah hoonah ayo....

Song of the Gods

In this country
In this country
The man with a dream needs luck
The man with a dream needs luck

Only if someone with power will help him
Only if someone with power will help him
Only if someone with power will help him
Can he make all his dreams come true

Good people
Good people
Good people
Can not help themselves
And the Gods can’t help them or anyone else

Why can’t the Gods up in heaven assemble
An army of battleships, bombers, and mines
To lift up the good and make bad people tremble?
Things might then be better for the Gods, Gods and mankind!

Why can’t the Gods up in heaven assemble
An army of battleships, bombers, and mines
To lift up the good and make bad people tremble?
Things might then be better for the Gods, Gods and mankind!

Good people
Good people
Cannot stay good for long, in this country
In this country
The plates are empty and bodies must be fed
No! No!
The commands of Gods do not help in the face of need!

Why can’t the heavenly Gods find a warrior
To lead them in combat and battle at last
To slaughter the heathen, the ugly, the useless
To lift up the future and to banish, to banish the past?

Why can’t the heavenly Gods find a warrior
To lead them in combat and battle at last
To slaughter the heathen, the ugly, the useless
To lift up the future and to banish, to banish the past?

To get yourself a meal
To get yourself a meal
You need the strength of the pack behind you
You need the strength of the pack behind you!

And you cannot pull one man together
You cannot pull one man together
You cannot pull one man together
Without tearing twelve others to bits!

Why don’t the Gods take a look at the earth again
And give all the children a world they desire
Send soldiers and tanks to lift up all the holy ones
And attack all the others with cannons, cannons and fire?

Why don’t the Gods take a look at the earth again
And give all the children a world they desire
Send soldiers and tanks to lift up all the holy ones
And attack all the others with cannons, cannons and fire?

Fire!
Fire!
Fire! …

More Than You Deserve

From the very first moment I saw you
I knew our love would be so strong
And the very first moment I kissed you
I knew our joy would last so long

But I saw you making love to my best friend
I didn’t know whatever to say
I saw you making love to my best friend
So I looked him right in his eyes, and I said,

Listen, boy

Won’t you take some more, it’s what you came for
Don’t mind me, I won’t throw you no curves
Go and have yourself a ball with my good woman
Won’t ya take some more boy, it’s more than you deserve
Won’t ya take some more boy, it’s more than you deserve

Now I think I’m gonna have to leave you
‘Cause I’m feeling much to weak to share
And the pie is cut too many pieces
The flavor that I crave is no longer there

And I saw you making love to two of my best friends
I didn’t know whatever to say
Then I saw you making love to a group of my best friends
So I looked them right in their eyes, and I said,

Listen, group

Won’t you take some more, it’s what you came for
Don’t mind me, I won’t throw you no curves
Go and have yourself a ball with my good woman
Won’t ya take some more boys, it’s more than you deserve
Won’t ya take some more boys, it’s more than you deserve
Won’t ya take some more boys, it’s more than you deserve....

Souvenirs

Baby, I think it’s over
The end is finally near
Don’t wanna talk about it anymore
I see it all so clear

So pack your bags and move on out
There ain’t nothin’ for you here
I think you know it’s over too
So why not disappear?

Wait a minute, baby, what’s that you say?
You really don’t think it’s fair
To send you outside into the cold, cold night
Oh, you poor, poor girl, I don’t really care

‘Cause you’ve been cold to me so long
I’m cryin’ icicles instead of tears
So pack your bags and move on out
There ain’t nothin’ for you here....

Baby, I know it’s over
I got a last idea
Don’t want you to leave me empty-handed
I agree that wouldn’t be fair

Take along a little something to remember me by
A little something to show that I care

Oh, step right up, you poor little girl
Step right up, you poor little girl
Step right up, you poor little girl
Take your souvenirs

Oh, step right up, you poor little girl
Step right up, you poor little girl
Step right up, you poor little girl
Take your souvenirs

Step right up, you poor, poor girl
Take your souvenir

Take my heart, drain it dry
I don’t blame you now ‘cause I know you really tried
Take my soul, you can have my mind
But you’re never gonna get your hands on my love
‘Cause it’s mine, mine—all mine

Take my master, you can have my slave
When I’m dead or buried alive, you can always take my grave
Take my body, well, I know you really think it’s fine
But you’re never gonna get your hands on my love
‘Cause it’s mine, mine—all mine

So tell me now, now who’s playing this game
Which side do I choose?
I’m going down, down and I’m spinning around
Is there anyone I can accuse?

What are the odds, for do I win or lose?
Oh baby please, sir, by the way, sir—may I be excused?

Take my sorrow, I’m running out of joy
When you’re tired of playing with yourself, you can always take my toys
Take your baby, show him a real good time
You always were a super dad but as a lover you were less than fine
Take my jewels, I know you love to see them shine
But you’re never gonna get your hands on my love
Because it’s mine, mine—all mine

So tell me now, now who’s playing this game
Which side do I choose?
I’m going down, down and I’m spinning around
Is there anyone I can accuse?

What are the odds, for do I win or lose?
Oh baby please, sir, by the way, sir—may I be excused?

Well, I don’t wanna play with you no more
Don’t wanna play with you no more, no no no
Don’t wanna play with you no more, no no (say it one more time)
Don’t wanna play with you no more
Don’t wanna play with you no more, ooh oh
Don’t wanna play with you....

The Spooky Song (The Simple Life)

Give me the simple life
Harry and Sharon, husband and wife
A comfy little bungalow, a yellow Chevrolet
Sitting on the porch at night, staring at the Milky Way
The Milky Way!

A guy like me could be the toast of the town
A guy like me, toasted medium brown
Hey pretty girl, do you remember old Ace?
How’d you like to marry a man?
How’d you like to marry a man?
How’d you like to marry a man?
A man, a man—without a face?

I’m a bundle of fun, a mountain of joy
Hey pretty girl, will you marry this boy?
A bundle of fun, a mountain of joy
Hey pretty girl, will you marry this pretty boy?

You’re just the man for me
Mr. and Mrs., he and she
A matching set of furniture, a shiny Frigidaire
Spinning through the countryside, sipping on the country air
Ah, the country air!

A guy like you could be the toast of the town
A guy like you, toasted medium brown
Hey pretty boy, would I remember old Ace?
I’d really like to marry a man
It just so happens I could marry a man
Well, I’d really like to marry a man
A man, a man—without a face!

You’re genuine fine, a bona fide win
Lovely as Adonis underneath the skin
Genuine fine, a bona fide win
Lovely as Adonis underneath—underneath the skin! …

You know I’ve given all the little things that a man can ever give
Now I only wanna settle down and live, live, live!

(gimme gimme gimme)
(gimme gimme gimme) (repeat)

You know I’ve given all the little things that a man can ever give
Now I only wanna settle down and live, live, live!

Gimme right now (gimme gimme gimme)
Gimme right now (gimme gimme gimme)
Gimme right now (gimme gimme gimme)
Gimme right now, before I have to take it!

Gimme right now (gimme gimme gimme)
Oh, gimme right now (gimme gimme gimme)
Oh, gimme right now (gimme gimme gimme)
Gimme right now!

He’s just the guy for me (she’s just the girl for me)
Mr. and Mrs., he and she
A flagpole out in front of the house, a barbecue in back of the house
Kids to call us Mom and Dad, it’s all a man could ever ask
Could ever ask!

A guy like me could be the toast of the town
A guy like me, toasted medium brown
Hey pretty girl, do you remember old Ace?
How’d you like to marry a man?
How’d you like to marry a man?
How’d you like to marry a man?
A man, a man—without a face?
Without a face?
Without a face? …

An hour or two of combat (combat?)

Hey boys, well, have you got the time
To fight another war with us like that
Just for Auld Lang Syne?

Go Go Guerrillas

In the middle of the jungle on a Saturday night
When the animals are sleeping and the moon is bright
If you listen real close you hear a jungle beat
That makes you want to snap your fingers and a-shuffle your feet

You sneak into the underbrush and shimmy shimmy shimmy along
Your mind is going loco, boobleablah, cocomoco with the uga booga jungle song
And you know you gotta find it if you’re gonna survive
‘Cause your body’s got the fever and it’s gonna drive you wild

It’s the go-go-go guerrillas
The revolutionary five-man live jive band
A band of go-go-go guerrillas
They got a fire fighting style and a dynamite sound
The things that they are playing gonna turn your head around
They got a rhythm that’ll burn you and beat that can kill
Everyone in town is flocking around those go-go-go-go-go killer guerrillas

You’re running ‘round in circles but you can’t see a thing
Looking for the sound that makes the jungle folk swing
You’re just about to give it up and call it a night
When up ahead behind a tree you see the most amazing sight

You sneak into the underbrush and shimmy shimmy shimmy along
Your mind is going loco, boobleablah, cocomoco with the uga booga cooka mooga missaluba jungle song
And you know you gotta find it if you’re gonna survive
‘Cause your body’s got the fever and it’s gonna drive you wild

It’s the go-go-go guerrillas
The revolutionary five-man live jive band
A band of go-go-go guerrillas
They got a fire fighting style and a dynamite sound
The things that they are playing gonna turn your head around

Keep on truckin’, truckin’ in the war zone
Squattin’ on a tombstone
Gonna get my head blown
Truckin’ in the war zone
Well, there’s no zone like the ozone
Ooh bliabla saki o thalidomide and Nagasaki
Hiroshima too
I’m a big mutation and so are you [adlibs and end]
