Scene ONE

A graveyard. A twisted tree. A headless angel. A gutted burnt-out church that seems to morph into the graveyard. Evening. Low mist. On the horizon, a bloodshot sunset. We are off the map of civilised Europe, long long ago…
A giggling cry.

FEMALE VOICE: Stop it, you’re scaring me

Three girls appear, each carrying a basket – Sarah, Zsa Zsa and Nadja

NADJA: Ah, a ruined church, and the strangest mushrooms in Lower Belabartokovich. Have you ever seen such a place?
ZSA ZSA: Sarah, it’s getting late.
NADJA: Sarah, it’s getting dark.
SARAH: Just a little bit further. We’ll be safe. And anyway what’s there to fear in a gloomy forest in deepest Transylvania three nights before Halloween?

The three bend to pick the mushrooms. Nadja will not be able to control herself, instead eating the mushrooms.

NADJA: Well what about the… You know, the…
SARAH: You don’t believe all those stories about the undead
NADJA/ZSA ZSA: I do…
SARAH: Good heavens! This is 1880-something. And I don’t fear the undead, I fear the unliving, cravant souls afraid to experience life! Nadja stop eating the mushrooms!
NADJA: I can’t stop eating. I’m scared
SARAH: Come now, Nadja. Zsa Zsa. Let’s say that old Transylvanian prayer

ANGELS ARISE
AS NIGHT MUST FALL
AND RADIANT EYES
STARE DOWN ON AS ALL
IF THE POWERS THAT BE
BE BEYOND OUR CALL
THEN ANGELS ARISE AS THE NIGHT MUST SURELY FALL

AND FOR EVERY PIT OF DARKNESS
THERE’S A LIGHT THAT SO PURE DIVINE
AND I ASK YOU TO PROTECT ME
FROM THOSE GASPS AND SHUTTERS AND
THOSE SHIVERS DOWN MY SPINE

THERE ARE THINGS THAT MUST BE MAGIC
THERE’S NO EXPLAINING WHY OR HOW
AND THERE’S EVERY SIGN THAT ONCE UPON A TIME
IS STARTING HERE AND NOW
THERE’S EVER SIGN…

From beyond the graveyard, the dominant and gothic castle Von Krolock comes into view

SARAH: My goodness! Look. It’s the castle of the dreaded count Von Krolock
NADJA: You know we’re not supposed to go near the dreaded castle Von Krolock
NADJA: They’re calling us back!
SARAH: Ten more mushrooms, then we’ll go home
KROLOCK’S VOICE (off): Sarah…
NADJA: God, these mushrooms are great!
ZSA ZSA: Did you hear something?
KROLOCK’S VOICE (off): Sarah…
SARAH: I do hear. It’s so strange. Every now and then in the middle of the night, I hear a voice calling my name…
KROLOCK’S VOICE (off): Sarah…
SARAH: I dream I’m in a castle, rather like this castle, wearing a blood red gown and dancing at a blood red ball in blood red velvet boots

Nadja starts to cry

Oh, don’t cry Nadja
NADJA: I ate all the mushrooms
KROLOCK’S VOICE (off): Sarah…
SARAH: That voice calling me in the night…

A strange, pulsing rhythm is heard. Suddenly – a Figure leaps in the fog, roaring like a beast. The Girls scream.

A Second Figure joins, then four more, half-glimpsed in the mist

Dance: God Has Left the Building

The first dance of the evening is dionysian revel, a vampire rave. Like teenagers on the rampage, the Vampires swarm all over. It is an explosion of freedom – no limits – utter abandon. One of them scrawls Carpe Noctem on a mousoleum in red. As if his bare hand itself were a spray-paint can. The Vampires begin to stalk and frighten Zsa Zsa and Nadja, who will eventually be abducted, while Sarah watches, transfixed, fascinated. At some point, the dance becomes more syncronized, a pounding rhythm, as if the Group was collectively summoning something forth. Zsa Zsa and Nadja are, screaming, dragged off by two Vampires. Leaving Sarah.
As if in response, there’s a thunderclap, and bolts of lightning pierce the sky. Sinister blinding lights blast out from within the castle. The earth seems to tremble and shake. The sky becomes darker and more bloodshot as the sun expires. Volcanic rumblings surround everyone, onstage and in the audience. Fixtures on the theatre wall begin to rattle, the earth tremours become compulsive. Something blasts out from beneath the ground, slowly with incredible strength, shooting out like a rocket launching, bulleting upwards, sending earth and stones flying. The huge shape is revealed to be an enormous coffin, and it is soon hovering in the air, wildly swinging back and forth like the pendulum of a clock, glowing and pulsing with inner light. The lid swings open and falls to the ground. The interior of the coffin lights up so that Krolock is a shadowy outline.

SARAH: Help me, God almighty!
KROLOCK: God has left the building.

The Vampires disappear into the mist. Krolock steps forward.

KROLOCK: You are perfect. How old are you child?
SARAH: I? Eighteen. In three days
KROLOCK: At the total eclipse of the moon…
SARAH: At the total eclipse of the moon?
KROLOCK: On Halloween…
SARAH: At midnight
KROLOCK: It’s too good. And your name? No. Don’t tell me. Sarah
SARAH: Sarah…

KROLOCK: I’VE BEEN LOOKING FOR AN ORIGINAL SIN
ONE WITH A TWIST AND A BIT OF A SPIN
AND SINCE I’VE DONE ALL THE OLD ONES
TILL THEY’ve ALL BEEN DONE IN
NOW, I’M JUST LOOKING
THEN I’M GONE LIKE THE WIND
ENDLESSLY SEARCHING FOR AN ORIGINAL SIN

(TURN AROUND…)
(TURN AROUND…)

I’VE BEEN WAITING FOR YOU SINCE YOU’VE BEEN BORN
I’VE WAITED PATIENTLY, BUT NOT FOR LONG
AND SINCE I KNOW ALL YOUR DREAMS
I UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU NEED
AND WHEN I CALL YOU, YOU MUST GO WHERE I LEAD
YOUR DREAMS ARE SO HUNGRY
IT’S TIME NOW TO FEED

SO I BLESS YOU WITH MY CURSE
THERE ARE TIES THAT YOU MUST SEVER
YOU’LL BE BETTER WHEN YOU’RE WORSE
YOU MUST DIE TO LIVE FOREVER
I WILL SHOW YOU THE DEPTHS OF THE NIGHT
WE CAN NEVER GO WRONG
TOGETHER WE CAN TAKE IT TO THE END OF THE LINE
MY LOVE IS LIKE A SHADOW ON YOU

SARAH:EVERY NOW AND THEN, I HEAR A VOICE

AND SINCE I KNOW ALL YOUR DREAMS
I UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU NEED
AND WHEN I CALL YOU, YOU MUST GO WHERE I LEAD
YOUR DREAMS ARE SO HUNGRY
IT’S TIME NOW TO FEED

SARAH: That accent…
KROLOCK: Accent? Sarah…

incantationally

Would you offer your throat to the wolf with the red roses?
SARAH: Would he offer me his mouth?
KROLOCK: Yes…
SARAH: Will he offer me his teeth?
KROLOCK: Yes…
SARAH: And would he offer me his hunger?
KROLOCK: Oh, yes…
SARAH: And does he love me?
KROLOCK: Sarah, would you offer your throat to the wolf with the red roses?
SARAH: And in return?
KROLOCK: Let me give you just a small taste…

He bites Sarah’s neck tenderly, hungry for more he still manages to restrain himself.

SARAH: That was just a taste?
KROLOCK: How do you feel?
SARAH: I feel good, I feel very good
KROLOCK: Listen. The dawn approaches
SARAH: That was a short night, and yet… so full
KROLOCK: I will return for you Sarah with a very special invitation. Until then. Remember me…

Krolock returns to his coffin. It sinks into the mist. Sarah is left alone, she faints…

Blackout. Scene change.

VOICES: GARLIC, GARLIC, GARLIC etc.

Scene TWO

An Inn, toward sunset, full of Peasants who are drinking, eating, cooking. Garlic hangs everywhere in huge strands. A Peasant on a ladder strings garlic up in eaves. During the following number we meet Chagal, the nervous, desperate, scurrying Innkeeper, overseeing everything. Magda, the busty, crass kitchen maid waiting on tables, constantly clutched at by Chagal. Rebecca, Chagal’s amble wife, constantly-compulsively-eating; and Boris, a somewhat strange bartender, who serves garlic in bowls. He bears a striking resmblence to a horror movie hunchback.

PEASANTS: WE LIVE IN CONSTANT DANGER
THERE’S EVIL IN THE AIR
SOME PEOPLE PRAY
SOME RUN AWAY
GO CRAZY WITH DESPAIR
BRING US ONE MORE BOWL NOW
WE WANT MORE, YOU’VE GOT THE GOODS
AND ANOTHER BOTTLE, RIGHT AWAY
YOU’LL FORGET WHAT’S IN THE WOODS
WE’LL FORGET WHAT’S IN THE WOODS

GARLIC GARLIC, WHEN TIMES ARE TOUGH AND GRAVE
GARLIC GARLIC, IT’S A REMEDY WE CRAVE
TRANSYLVANIA IS SCARY
ONE CANNOT BE TOO WARY
FOR WITH GARLIC WE ARE SAVED
WITH GARLIC WE ARE SAVED

THE DAYS ARE DISAPPOINTING
THE NIGHTS ARE EVEN WORSE
THE COWS ARE SCARED
THE SHEEP ARE WARY
OUT LIVES ARE SIMPLY CURSED
WE DANCE AS IF WE’RE HAPPY
WE SING AS IF WE’RE FINE
BUT THE SIMPLE FACT, IS SIMPLY THAT
WE’VE GONE AND LOST OUR MINDS
WE’VE GONE AND LOST OUR MINDS
GARLIC GARLIC, THE SECRET OF STAYING YOUNG
GARLIC GARLIC, THAT’S WHY WE’RE SO WELL HUNG
WHAT’S STRONG IS GETTING STRONGER
WHAT’S LONG IS GETTING LONGER
WITH GARLIC ON YOUR TONGUE
WITH GARLIC ON YOUR TONGUE

WE’VE SIMPLY LOST OUR MINDS
WE’VE SIMPLY LOST OUR MINDS
WE’VE SIMPLY GONE, WE’VE SIMPLY GONE
AND LOST OUR BLOODY MINDS!

GARLIC GARLIC, THE SECRET OF STAYING YOUNG
GARLIC GARLIC, THAT’S WHY WERE SO WELL HUNG
WHAT’S STRONG IS GETTING STRONGER
WHAT’S LONG IS GETTING LONGER
WITH GARLIC ON YOUR TONGUE
WITH GARLIC ON YOUR TONGUE

GARLIC, GARLIC, IT’S THE NOURISHMENT WE CRAVE
GARLIC GARLIC, WHEN TIMES ARE TOUGH AND GRAVE
GARLIC GARLIC, IT’S A REMEDY WE PRAY
TRANSYLVANIA IS TOO SCARY
ONE CAN NOT BE TOO WARY
FOR GARLIC WE’LL BE SAVED
FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE
WITH GARLIC WE’LL BE SAVED

CHAGAL: Boris, more garlic
BORIS: Boris serve garlic…

Dance interlude: A high-energy peasant dance which is so extreme and frantic. It becomes an industrial-strength exaggeration of Eastern European show-offy folk dance troupes like the Moiseyev. But there’s a reason for all this high octane cabin fever and areclimbing the walls, dancing to drown out the terrors outside.
Wolf howl. Suddenly the door is opened from the outside. The wind whips a cloud of snow into the inn. Professor Abronsius, interlectual and scientist, enters. He becomes an object of stares from the Villagers.

ABRONSIUS: Greetings gentle peasents.

murmur

I am Abronsius of Heidelberg and I seek the very jubla hela Gocovich
CHAGAL: Rebecca, we have a stranger!
REBECCA: The first in twenty years
MAGDA: So sell them the postcards
CHAGAL: Okay. I sell them the postcards but we tell them nothing. Especially about the… you know who…
ABRONSIUS: Alfred!

Alfred, the Professor’s faithful and aide factotum, enters laden with bags.

ALFRED: At your side professor

Murmur from the Villagers.

ABRONSIUS: Alfred. The journal, if you please
ALFRED (placing bags down to read from journal): October 29th 1880-something…
ABRONSIUS: Yes…
ALFRED: …We have arrived in a village that smells like feet
ABRONSIUS: Feet or garlic?
ALFRED: The inteprid professor searches for a vampire

Shock from Villagers

ABRONSIUS: Thank you Alfred. That will do
CHAGAL (stepping forward): At your service, gentlemen. Chagal, transylvanian innkeeper and Rebecca, my Transylvanian wife
ABRONSIUS: Abronsius, international vampirisist

shock

And Alfred, my faithful foctotum
REBECCA: His foctotum?
CHAGAL: If that means what I think it does, they can leave right now!
ABRONSIUS: Mr. Chagal is there per chance a castle near by?

murmur

Per chance the castle Von Krolock?

murmur

Stop that!

It does

BORIS: Excuse me, sir. You want the castle von Krolock. You go across the street, you take a left…
CHAGAL: Boris!
BORIS: Sir, you…
CHAGAL: Zip it! Go fetch the garbage. Rebecca, get the gentlemen’s bags
REBECCA: The bags?
MAGDA: Boris
BORIS: Just trying to be helpful

Bell tolling

MAGDA: Sunset. Sunset! Get to your homes! Lock your doors, bar you shutters! Save yourselves!

The Peasants exit, tumbling out of the Inn fearfully, at top speed.

ABRONSIUS: Your village seems to fear sunset
CHAGAL: No. It’s the wolves, sir. They can be real devils
ABRONSIUS: Devils, eh? Legend has it the devil can’t come in unless he is invited in
CHAGAL: Well…

knock

Come in!

The door opens and Mme. von Krolock enters – a foreboding old woman draped in black.

MME. VON KROLOCK: Evening, Mr Chagal
CHAGAL: Countess von Krolock
MME. VON KROLOCK: Do you have any blood red silk suitable for a ball garment, Chagal
CHAGAL: Of course, countess. A pack of silk. Magda. Silk!
MAGDA: Ya! Ya!
MME. VON KROLOCK: How is your daughter, Chagal? The fair Sarah
CHAGAL: My Sarah. My prize, my jewel
MME. VON KROLOCK: She has a birthday soon, does she not?
CHAGAL: Yes madame. In two nights.
MME. VON KROLOCK: At the total eclipse of the moon?
CHAGAL: Oh Halloween
MME. VON KROLOCK: It’s too good…
CHAGAL: But she’s airing Madame, she’s feverish
REBECCA: But she’s been acting so strangely today
MME. VON KROLOCK: May I go up and visit the poor girl?
ABRONSIUS: No madame, you may not. No one may. It is Abronsius of Heidelberg who speaks
MME. VON KROLOCK (with sarcasm): Oh… I’m scared. Mr Chagal, are you still having those nightmares? Congratulations, a good nightmare comes so rarely
MAGDA: Your silk, madame
MME. VON KROLOCK: Look at this silk! You can see your hand right through it. Made by the nuns in France, you know. I hate nuns
CHAGAL: Yes, Madame. Who doesn’t?
MME. VON KROLOCK: I leave. Tell your daughter to mind herself, Mr Chagal. The wolves you know, they have a heartless appetite. But then don’t we all

With this, she exits.

CHAGAL: She’s looking well…
ABRONSIUS: Mr Chagal I have arrived just in time. For I can save your village and your daughter
CHAGAL: My Sarah. My prize, my jewel…
ABRONSIUS
I travel the world and rid it of vampires

shock from Villagers

That’s right, vampires

shock

Now there is only one of those monsters left in the entire world, and I will have him. The count Giovanni Von Krolock…

REBECCA: But, sir. There’s more than one, you know there’s a whole pack…
ABRONSIUS: Please, madame, do not interupt! For where there is smoke, I know there is a campfire. And where there is a fear of sunset, I know there is a… Vampire

YOU THINK I HAVEN’T GOT A CLUE
YOUR CRINGING MAKES ME WEARY
ITS TIME I INTRODUCE TO YOU
MY FUNDAMENTAL THEORY
LOGIC, LOGIC
THE WORLD IS BASED ON LOGIC

WHEN I WAS BUT A LITTLE BOY
A SITTING ON MY MAMMAS KNEE
A VISIONARY THOUGHT I GOT
AS PURE AS TRIGONOMETRY
LOGIC LOGIC
THE ANSWER IS LOGIC

SO TO HEIDELBERG I TRAVELLED
AT THE TENDER AGE OF SEVEN
ALL MY COURSES I UNRAVELLED
BY THE TIME I TURNED ELEVEN
USING LOGIC (LOGIC)
I BECAME PETAGOGIC

MY THINKING’S CLEAR MY VISIONS FIRM
ILLUSIONS CAN’T DELUDE ME
THIS EARLY BIRD WILL CATCH HIS WORM
YOU SIMPLY CAN’T ELUDE ME
PUT ME TO THE TEST
AND YOU WILL FIND
YOU CAN’T MESS
WITH THIS PROFESSORS MIND

WITH A LOGIC UNMISTAKABLE IRRATIONAL REALITY
YOUR STUBBORNNESS I’LL SHAKE AND BREAK YOUR CONFIDENTIALITY
MY SKILL IS UNSURPASSABLE
MY THINKING TRULY AWESOME
YET I DO BECOME IRASCIBLE
WITH PEOPLE PLAYING POSSUM LIKE YOU DO

I WAS STICKING OUT MY NECK
WITH SUCH IMPECCABLE DETECTION
WHILE DEFLECTING ALL THE THREAT
THAT YOU DIRECT IN MY DIRECTION
I CAME ALL THE WAY FROM HEIDELBURG
TO UNDERTAKE MY FINAL QUEST
TO SAVE YOUR SUICIDAL BURG
I’LL DO MY LEVEL-HEADED BEST FOR YOU

YOU MAY BE A SIMPLE PIGEON
BUT YOU’D FLY LIKE A TOBOGGAN
IF YOU ONLY HAD A SMIDGEON
OF THE KNOWLEDGE IN MY NOGGIN.
NOW YOU LOSE THIS SIMPLY QUERY
WHEN I EXECUTE THIS HIGH KICK
I’LL ELUCIDATE THIS THEORY
WITH A LOGIC ALMOST PSYCHIC LIKE I DO
TO DETECT THE UNDETECTABLE
IS WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT FROM ME
DISSECTING THE RESPECTABLE
JUST LIKE AN APPENDECTOMY
MY BRAIN IS LIKE A RAZOR
CONTEMPLATING THE CONFUSION
RIPPING DEEP INTO THE HAZE
AND WIDE POLLUTING THE DELUSION THIS IS TRUE!

ALL: ALWAYS THINKING RATHER LOGICAL TO CAUSE A REVOLUTION
HE WON’T GIVE A DAMN, NO NOT ONE BIT ABOUT YOUR REVOLUTION
AND HIS THEORY IS SO RADICAL
AND CERTAIN SO FAR REACHING THAT A PERMANENT SABBATICAL
FOR PREACHING WHAT HE’S TEACHING

OUR PROFESSOR IS THE PIPS
SHOOTING FROM THE HIPS
SO WE NEED TO GET A GRIP
FOR LETTING PEOPLE DIP
THIS SONG SURE IS A PAIN
ARE WE GOING ALL INSANE
AND WE NEVER WILL CHANGE WHAT’S LOGICALLY TRUE

ABRONSIUS: Take me to your daughter!

ALL: Faithful and true!

The Group exit. Chagal leading the way, leaving Boris "alone"

BORIS: Boris get the bags. Boris toss the garbage. Hey, Boris! Sing us Wagners greatest hits! My feelings are hurt! My self esteem… Is very low

He moves to grab the bags, but a high screeching stops him…

Hello? Hello? Something is there?

Into the Inn flies a Bat, which rests upon the bar.

BAT: Boris, Boris, Boris, Boris…

Boris turns, startled to find the Bat staring at him.

BORIS (calmly): Ah! A bat, now there’s a bat in the house.

then panics

There’s a bat in the house!

BAT: Good evening, Boris. How are you tonight?
BORIS (stunned, confused): What was that?
BAT (indicating bags): Boris, why don’t you leave those you fucking idiot! And come with me?

The rather rude Bat attacks Boris. Biting upon his neck. Boris is at once transformed into Krolock’s slave.

BORIS: Yes master?
BAT: I’m going to ask you to do something very weird
BORIS: I’ll obey, master
BAT: I want you to take that fuckin’

– and rip out –

BORIS: Could you sweep that by me again?
BAT: I want you to take that fuckin’

– and rip out –

BORIS: Yes master! Your will is my own!
ABRONSIUS’ VOICE (off): Oh, Boris…
BORIS: Command me, Mass-ter

He turns to the Bat, who is no longer there. Abronsius appears.

ABRONSIUS (indicating the bags, which Boris has not brought upstairs): I’m going to need these bags
BORIS: Yes, master
ABRONSIUS: There’s a lifetime of research in there
BORIS: Indeed master
ABRONSIUS: You’re a good man. Just try to act a little less strange

Abronsius exits again. Boris goes to reach for the bags when, he starts to dance rather wildly, this will no doubt be a sort of Polka or waltz, which eventually erupts as Boris crashes into a wall and parts of it fall.

BORIS: Oh, I’m a naughty boy! Command me master!

He grabs the bags, quickly running up stairs.

Blackout. Scene change.

Scene THREE

Upstairs at the Inn. Split scene: Two bedrooms, Sarah’s at right, with a connecting door between them. Sarah is in her room in a tub, bathing, humming (Sarah’s Melody). Alfred comes up the stairs alone, noting in the journal. The Group will eventually join him.

ALFRED: Six twenty-six PM. I’m going upstairs to meet the mysterious Sarah

Alfred opens Sarah’s bedroom door, as she is rising from the tub.

SARAH: Well, well, well. Don’t you look tasty!
ALFRED (nervously): Six twenty-seven PM. An apparently naked girl…

to Sarah, who has now sunk back into the tub

I’m sorry. Hello

SARAH: Hello
ALFRED: I’m…
SARAH: Sarah. And I’m…
ALFRED: Alfred…

The Group have now appeard. Rebecca and Chagal have immediately burst into Sarah’s bedroom.

REBECCA: Sarah, for shame!
CHAGAL: Bathing! Naked! What next?

Sarah is pulled out of the tub by Rebecca, who drapes a robe over her naked body. Chagal turns to Alfred.

You close your eyes and clean your mind. You bachelor!

ABRONSIUS: Mr Chagal, it’s just as I suspected. Your daughter has been bitten by vampiric astrotinist. I can see the punctures from here. Alfred, get that girl into bed
ALFRED: I’m sorry?
ABRONSIUS: We must purify her blood. Fortunately I have a transfusion apparatus right here in my la vis.

Abronsius opens his bag, and mysteriously a rather large transfusion kit appears as if from this rather small leather bag. Alfred has lifted Sarah and laid her upon her bed, Sarah begins to behave in a rather sexual manner.

SARAH: Would you hand me my special sponge? I love my sponge. Oh yes! Lather me in suds!
REBECCA: See I told you she was acting strangely. She’s acting just like Magda, that bavarian slut!
MAGDA: Thank you!
ABRONSIUS: There we are! Oh, damn transfusion. Alfred, your right-arm please? I’ll need a pint of your blood

Abronsius inserts a needle into Sarah’s arm, and one into Alfred’s. Sarah rather dizzily starts to doze off. Chagal and Rebecca can only watch.

ALFRED: So, professor. Ehm… this girl isn’t, ehm…
ABRONSIUS: A vampire? No. But she’s tainted.

We see the blood start to flow from Alfred’s arm into Sarah’s.

Oh here it comes. Better late than never

ALFRED: Is this girl, you know…
ABRONSIUS: A vampire? No, no, no… But she’s tainted, and dangerous! She’s what we call a hemi-demi-semi-vampire. To be a total vampire one must be completely drained of every last drop of blood in one’s body, and sucked as dry as a mummy’s scrotum. To put it graphically…
MAGDA (examining Sarah): She is falling asleep, sir
ABRONSIUS: Excellent. But that seducing brute will be after her, and soon. For there is an ancient prophecy that states if a virgin of eighteen by the name of Sarah willingly, willingly mind you, allows herself to be bitten at the total eclipse of the moon on Halloween then… Then…
ALFRED: Yes professor, what happens then?
ABRONSIUS: There’s no time now, I’ll tell you later.

He moves to his bag, removing certain items to hand to the Transylvanians

Magda. Hang this cross around her neck
MAGDA: May I, sir?

Magda responds.

ABRONSIUS: Mrs Chagal, you put up this garlic, sprinkle this wolfbane and drape this orange and black crepe paper around the room.

She too responds

Mr Chagal
CHAGAL: Sir?>
ABRONSIUS: Set out this pumpkin
CHAGAL: This will really scare them away…

responds

ABRONSIUS: Boris?

Boris appears from behind Sarah’s bed. Where he has been concealed this whole time.

BORIS: Yes, master?
ABRONSIUS (hands BORIS bag): In this bag are ten silver nails. Keep them very close
BORIS: I’ll obey, master

Boris disappears downstairs

ABRONSIUS: There is still something strange about that man…
ALFRED: Merciful God, how could you let this angel be tainted?
ABRONSIUS: Fear not my boy! It’s all passing from her memory. See her punctures are disappearing from her neck, even as you bleed…

A tender moment as Sarah comes round. The two stare at each other lovingly. The whole Group reflect on how wonderous this evening is.

ALFRED: A GIRL AS BEAUTIFUL AS SHE
I HAVE NEVER SEEN
A GIRL AS BEAUTIFUL AS SHE
SARAH: A BOY AS BEAUTIFUL AS HE
ALFRED: SO DISARMING
SARAH: CHARMING
BOTH: I HAVE NEVER EVER SEEN

ALFRED: THERE’S NEVER BEEN A NIGHT LIKE THIS
SINCE MY LIFE BEGAN
THE THING I’D DO FOR JUST ONE KISS
I MIGHT NEVER UNDERSTAND

BOTH: I’M TOO EXCITED, I CAN’T SLEEP
I’M AWAKE, YET I DREAM
MY HEART’S IGNITED WITH A DEEP BURNING ACHE
AND I DREAM
A LOVELY DREAM

CHAGAL: I’VE NEVER HAD A NIGHT LIKE THIS
AND IT MAKES ME SAD
OH MAGDA
A MAID AS BEAUTIFUL AS SHE
I HAVE NEVER EVER HAD

MAGDA: I’VE NEVER HAD A NIGHT LIKE THIS
AND IT MAKES ME MAD
REBECCA: I USED TO HAVE SOME NIGHTS LIKE THIS
MAGDA: THIS EMPTINESS, NOT HAPPINESS
REBECCA: NOW I MISS WHAT I ONCE HAD
MAGDA: THAT’S ALL I’VE EVER HAD

ALFRED & SARAH: I AM DELIGHTED HEAVEN SENT YOU TO START SOMETHING NEW
REBECCA & MAGDA: NOTHING IS EVER SENT FOR ME
ALFRED & SARAH: WISH I COULD FIGHT IT BUT I CAN’T FOR MY HEART BELONGS TO YOU
FANTASIES COME TRUE

ALFRED & SARAH: LORD, IF I EVER FALL IN LOVE LET IT BE JUST FOR ME
LORD, IF I EVER FALL IN LOVE LET IT BE SOMEONE AS GLORIOUS AS SHE/HE
AND ETERNALLY
I’LL WAIT BREATHLESSLY
LET IT BE

By the end of the song Sarah’s blood has been replenished. Abronsius removes the needles, packing the transfusion away. Chagal appears with a glass of red wine for Alfred. Magda and Rebecca are gone back downstairs to clear up.

ABRONSIUS: Success! Now Mr Chagal, you must get some lumber and seal these windows with Boris’ silver nails
CHAGAL: For my Sarah. My ruby, my emerald, I’d do anything. But you want me downstairs.

He grabs the pumpkin he set out, moving downstairs

I’ve got a pumpkin here, and I’m not afraid to use it!
ABRONSIUS: Alfred, that night flying blood sucker is so close I can feel his breath. The moment this girl is by herself, he’ll be on her like a metaphor. So, don’t leave her alone for a second
ALFRED: I won’t…
ABRONSIUS: Guard her with your life
ALFRED: I will…
ABRONSIUS: I’ll be in the toilet

Abronsius exits. Sarah stirs.

SARAH: Where am I? Who am I?
ALFRED: You’re Sarah. Remember? Sarah, such a beautiful name…
SARAH: Who are you, again?
ALFRED: I am Alfred. A former theology student turned factotum, and thanks to an apparatus, my blood is part of your blood now
SARAH: So we have had a mystical marriage
ALFRED: Yes
SARAH: A union of our separate essences
ALFRED: You and I are one, if still legally too
SARAH: But why are you here?
ALFRED: I am on a mission to rid the world of a monster. For there is an evil after you, Sarah
SARAH: Not the… ?
ALFRED: Yes, the…
SARAH: And you’re not afraid?
ALFRED: I don’t fear the un-dead, I fear the un-living, cravant souls afraid to experience life
SARAH: I said exactly the same thing. Do you keep a journal?
ALFRED (producing it): Here it is
SARAH (producing her’s in turn): Here’s mine
ALFRED: You’re on page three forty-two…
SARAH: You’re not in mine. Well not yet. But you will be when I find the words to do you justice
ALFRED: Sarah. Leave this horror. Fly home with me to Heidelberg
SARAH: Heidelberg? It sounds heavenly…

sing

Chagal disturbs this romantic moment.

CHAGAL (pointing to Alfred): You! Go celebate someplace else
ALFRED: Leave this girl alone for an instant, sir, and you shall answer to me with pistols
CHAGAL: You may share the same blood Mr Factotum, but that will be the only bodily fluid you exchange in my house! Now go! Leave!

Alfred goes.

Now, where are those silver nails? Silver nail? Who needs silver nails? What was good enough for my father, toi! Is good enough for me. Sleep now my Sarah, and may all your dreams be gone…

As he sings he tries to bar up the roof window using nails.

WHEN A MAN HAS GOT A PRETTY DAUGHTER
THEN HIS LIFE IS PRETTY FILLED WITH PAIN
CAUSE SHE NEVER DOES THE THINGS HE TAUGHT HER
IT’S ENOUGH TO DRIVE A MAN INSANE
IT’S A PITY THAT I MUST CONCEAL YOU
THOUGH YOU’RE LOVELY AS A BUDDING ROSE
BUT THERE’S ALWAYS SOMEONE OUT TO STEAL YOU
YOU CAN’T SEE THEM BUT YOUR FATHER KNOWS

SLEEP MY LITTLE DARLING
DREAM MY TENDER STARLING
NO ONE MUST AWAKE YOU
NO ONE MUST A TAKE YOU
YOU’RE NOT READY
I’M NOT READY
WE’RE NOT READY
DON’T LEAVE DADDY

NOW YOU’RE LOOKING FORWARD TO YOUR BIRTHDAY
YOU STILL THINK THAT IT IS FUN TO GROW
BUT TO ME YOUR BIRTHDAY IS A CURSE DAY
CAUSE IT MEANS YOU’RE OLD ENOUGH TO GO

SLEEP MY SWEET CONFECTION
PAPA’S YOUR PROTECTION
NO ONE MUST CONFUSE YOU
NO ONE WILL ABUSE YOU
I’M NOT READY
YOU’RE NOT READY
NO ONE’S READY
DON’T LEAVE DADDY…

A rhytmic thump coming from outside.

Hello? Hello? Is somebody there? Magda?

Chagal climbs up to peer out of the skyline in the roof. At this precise moment, the Bat flies into the bedroom and Chagal falls out.

Ah! …

Boris appears in the bedroom. Sarah awakens.

BORIS: Come master, she awaits you

Boris disapears.

SARAH: Hello? Is somebody there?

Krolock appears in the skyline, looking down upon Sarah.

KROLOCK: A GOOD NIGHTMARE COMES SO RARELY
WHILE ORDINARY DREAMS ARE SO EASY TO FIND
A GOOD NIGHTMARE COMES SO RARELY
I’LL SHOW YOU YOURS
IF YOU SHOW ME MINE…

Krolock floats down into the room.

Remember me?

YOU CAN CHOOSE TO STAY
AND BE A GOOD WIFE SOME FINE DAY
BUT WILL IT EVER BE ENOUGH?
YOU KNOW IT’LL NEVER BE ENOUGH

YOU CAN WORK AND PRAY HERE
TILL YOU’RE FAT AND OLD AND GREY
BUT WILL IT EVER BE ENOUGH?
YOU KNOW THAT IT’LL NEVER BE ENOUGH

IT’S NOT ENOUGH TO MAKE YOUR YEARNING GO AWAY
IT’S NOT ENOUGH TO LIGHT YOUR TIRED EYES
IT’S NOT ENOUGH TO PUT SOME PASSION IN A DREARY DAY

EVERYTHING THAT THEY TOLD YOU
WAS NOTHING BUT LIES
EVERYTHING THAT THEY BOUGHT YOU
WAS NOTHING BUT BRIBES

AND I KNOW THAT YOU WANT MORE
ALL YOU WANTED WAS A PIECE OF THE NIGHT
SO COME ALONG AND TAKE YOUR SHARE
STOP YOUR SEARCHING EVERYWHERE
CAUSE THE ANSWER’S HERE
I INVITE YOU TO THE BALL OF YOUR LIFE
OF YOUR LIFE…

THERE’S SO MUCH MORE TO THE NIGHT
THERE’S SO MUCH MORE TO THE NIGHT
THE BEAUTY OF DARKNESS
MIRACULOUS LANDS
YOU’LL GET IT ALL
IF YOU GIVE ME YOUR HANDS
GIVE ME YOUR HEART
AND YOUR SOUL WILL TAKE FLIGHT
FOREVERMORE IN THE NIGHT…

THIS IS YOUR CHANCE
THIS IS YOUR TIME
BREAK ALL THE CHAINS
AND GIVE ME YOUR HAND
GIVE ME YOUR SOUL
AND YOUR HEART WILL TAKE FLIGHT
FOREVERMORE IN THE NIGHT
FOREVER MINE IN THE NIGHT
THERE’S SO MUCH MORE TO THE NIGHT…

ALFRED’S VOICE (off): Sarah! Sarah, are you there?
KROLOCK: Will you come with me?
SARAH: Take me to your castle
KROLOCK: No, no, no. You must come to me willingly by midnight tommorow. Will you come?
SARAH: Yes!
KROLOCK: Swear to me!
SARAH: I swear it!
KROLOCK: Swear to me on your father’s grave!
SARAH: But my father isn’t dead yet!
KROLOCK: Let’s pretend. Swear to me on your father’s grave
SARAH: I swear it on my father’s grave. I will come
KROLOCK: Until tommorow, and remember…

A GOOD NIGHTMARE COMES SO RARELY
WHILE ORDINARY DREAMS ARE SO EASY TO FIND
A GOOD NIGHTMARE COMES SO RARELY
I’LL SHOW YOU YOURS IF YOU SHOW ME MINE…

Krolock vanishes in a swirl of smoke. Alfred bursts into the room. Sarah faints into his arms.

Blackout. Scene change.

TOWN OFFICIAL’S VOICE: Emergency. Emergency town meeting. Everyone to the town square!

Scene FOUR

Infront of Chagal’s Inn. It has snowed overnight. The Villagers are gathered. Rebbeca is being consoled by Magda. Abronsius and Alfred are the centre of attention.

ABRONSIUS: Citizens of Lower Belakocovich. Thank you all for coming

"Enthusiasm" from Villagers.

Now as some of you may know, this village has a vampire…

MAGDA: One vampire? We’re infested with the bastards!
ABRONSIUS: Don’t interupt me, please. Now all of you have been touched by this evil. You certainly all seem a bit touched. So, consider Nadja and Zsa Zsa, those two dear sweet innocent girls who are missing
FEMALE VILLAGER: Actually, sir. No one liked those two very much

Murmur from Villagers

MALE VILLAGER: That Nadja was a real bitch…
ABRONSIUS: Nevertheless. Consider this good womans husband who disapeared last night…
REBECCA (upset): Chagal…
ABRONSIUS: This was a…
REBECCA: Chagal…
ABRONSIUS: This was a…
REBECCA (rambling, then): Chagal! …
ABRONSIUS: This was a man who all knew well and respected, and yes, even loved
VILLAGER: Who was this again?
REBECCA: Chagal!
ABRONSIUS: So how does one spot a vampire? It’s very simple really. They’re allergic to daylight, and they turn to dust when exposed to the sun. They tend to wear black, they listen to very loud music, and wear a lot of hair cream. Citizens, if we seize the castle now in daylight I can drive a stake through the heart of this pestilent fool! And you can live your happy lives in peace once more. Now who will join me? What the Devil is wrong with you people? How can you live with such horror?

Four Lumberjacks rush on carrying the frozen body of Chagal.

LUMBERJACKS: Chagal! Chagal! We found him frozen in the woods…
ABRONSIUS: No, no. We can’t let him in the Inn. Take him to the smokehouse quickly
ALFRED: Clear! Clear!
REBECCA: Chagal! Chagal! What have you gone and done now?

Chagal is placed upon a table. Abronsius bends over him and discovers small bite wounds on the body.

ABRONSIUS: Observe, Alfred. Two holes in the neck, four more in the arms, eight in the legs, and two right through the apron…
ALFRED: Isn’t that an awful lot of holes for just one vampire?
ABRONSIUS: That beast must have been pretty peckish

A church bell tolling marking "sunset"

VILLAGER: Sunset! Get to your homes! Lock your doors! Bar your shutters! Save yourselves for God’s sake!

Chaos. The Villagers disapear as fast as their legs can carry them.

ABRONSIUS: I do wish they wouldn’t do that. Alfred we must get the hammer and stake before our frosty friend thaws out
REBECCA: What all this hammer and stake? …
ABRONSIUS: Madame, it’s the only way to save your husbands immortal soul

Abronsius and Alfred move off to aquire their equipment.

REBECCA: Immortal soul. Oh, Magda he was such a good man
MAGDA: Yes. No he wasn’t really a good man
REBECCA: No he wasn’t a good man. But he was the only man I had
MAGDA: Now look at him. Isn’t it odd?
REBECCA: So still. And how he used to scamper, always scampering after dreams
MAGDA: Just like us all with our dreams
REBECCA: I always dreamt of having a proper kitchen. One without rats, or smaller rats
MAGDA: I always wanted a hair salon. Or a whorehouse…

REBECCA: HE WAS MY MASTER
HE WAS MY LORD
NOW EVER AFTER, HE’S STIFFER THAN A BOARD
DEATH IS SUCH AN ODD THING
DEATH IS SUCH AN ODD THING

MAGDA: WHEN HE CAME NEAR ME
HE GROPED AND HE CLUTCHED
NOW, I CAN TOUCH HIM WITHOUT BEING TOUCHED
DEATH IS SUCH AN ODD THING

BOTH: DEATH IS SUCH AN ODD THING
WHEN HE LIVED, THERE WAS REPULSION
PURE DISGUST AND THEN REVULSION
BUT AS A CORPSE HE’S CALM AND COY
LIKE A LITTLE SLEEPING BOY

MAGDA: ISN’T IT FUNNY?
MAYBE ITS NOT
BUT HE’S SO FRIGID
AND HE USED TO BE SO HOT
DEATH IS SUCH AN ODD THING
BOTH: DEATH IS SUCH AN ODD THING

REBECCA: IT’S SO IRONIC
MAGDA: IT’S SO IRONIC
REBECCA: TOTALLY DROLL
MAGDA: TOTALLY DROLL
REBECCA: HE USED TO USE ME
MAGDA: HE USED TO USE ME
REBECCA: NOW I’M IN CONTROL
MAGDA: NOW I’M IN CONTROL
REBECCA: DEATH IS SUCH AN ODD THING
MAGDA: DEATH IS SUCH AN ODD THING
BOTH: DEATH IS SUCH AN ODD THING
WHEN HE LIVED, HE WAS OFFENSIVE
HIS LIBIDO WAS ENTRANCING
REBECCA: AS A CORPSE HE’S SOFT AND FAT
MAGDA: LIKE A FINE ARISTOCRAT (OW!)
BOTH: ISN’T IT SENSELESS?
FILLS YOU WITH FEAR
WE’LL GO ON LIVING
BUT HE’LL NEVER BE HERE
DEATH IS SUCH AN ODD THING
DEATH IS SUCH AN ODD THING
DEATH IS SUCH AN ODD THING

Chagal sits uptright. Rebecca and Magda scream. Chagal howls then barks like an animal before escaping into the woods. The two women are left a little stunned.
Abronsius and Alfred return, armed with a hammer and stake.

ABRONSIUS: All right, Alfred. This will be your first staking, so a few pointers on technique are in order
REBECCA: Mr Professor?
ABRONSIUS: Quiet, please! Now you must pound hard, you must pound straight. And it helps to swivle your hips, pivot on your left foot and swing through the stake…

Abronsius will demonstrate such a movement

REBECCA/MAGDA: Mr Professor?
ABRONSIUS: What is it, madame?

Abronsius turns to find Chagal gone

Isaac Newton! He’s gone!
MAGDA: He barked like a dog and ran back into the woods
ABRONSIUS: I’ll go after him
ALFRED: Let me come with you, professor
ABRONSIUS: No. You take the women inside
ALFRED: Ladies…
ABRONSIUS: And Alfred. Guard Sarah

Abronsius, with hammer and stake, disapears off into the forest.

Scene FIVE

ALFRED: Quickly ladies, quickly!

Alfred escorts the women inside. Sarah appears.

SARAH: I can’t go! No. I musn’t!

A wolf howl

Hello? Is somebody there?

A sinister figure suddenly steps out of the shadows behind her and puts a hand on her shoulder. He steps forward. We see that it’s Father von Krolock, a priest in a long black cassock.

FATHER VON KROLOCK: Peace my child
SARAH: Oh, a priest. I’ve never seen you at church on Sundays
FATHER VON KROLOCK: I’m not an early riser
SARAH: Oh father, father. I need a priest right now
FATHER VON KROLOCK: Yes child. Would you like to confess?
SARAH: You’re wearing no cross
FATHER VON KROLOCK: Oh, why be a slave to clerical fashion? Why be a slave to anything or anyone, except you? Except of course, you know…

He indicates above

What’s his name? Kneel to me
SARAH: Bless me father for I have sinned…
FATHER VON KROLOCK: Bless you child for you have desired. So have we all…
SARAH: But you see father I have met this man and he’s very…
FATHER VON KROLOCK: Cosmopolitan? Handsome?
SARAH: Well… He has this wonderful accent
FATHER VON KROLOCK: Accent?
SARAH: I swore I’d meet him tonight. I swore it on my father’s grave, and now my father has died
FATHER VON KROLOCK: Nonsense! Your father is waiting for you at the castle. At the ball
SARAH: How do you know about the ball?
FATHER VON KROLOCK: This place stinks of carnage and corruption. But you Sarah, you smell of youth, you smell of perfumed thighs and powdered breasts. For your penance, powder them again
SARAH: How do you know my name? Who are you really?
FATHER VON KROLOCK: I come bearing a birthday gift from your papa. Open when the moment is right

He motions, and a spotlight comes up on a bundle downstage

SARAH: How will I know when that moment is?
FATHER VON KROLOCK: Why not now? This moment is as right as you are

Father von Krolock slinks out. Sarah opens the bundle and finds a pair of Red velvet boots. Alfred appears from inside the Inn.

ALFRED: Sarah! Sarah! What are you doing outside? Don’t you realise how dangerous this is?
SARAH: I just wanted some air
ALFRED: You are either unbelievably foolish or incredibly brave
SARAH: What time is it, Alfred?
ALFRED: Nearly midnight
SARAH: Nearly midnight? You needn’t watch over me
ALFRED: I… I…
SARAH (sensing what he is about to say): No, Alfred. You musn’t…
ALFRED: We are one blood, remember?
SARAH: Yes, I feel that too. But time, Alfred. The time is ticking away
ALFRED: I was braver than I am
SARAH: Oh, Alfred. And you were a theology student?
ALFRED: Sarah let’s go. Let’s run away right now!

ALFRED: I WILL NEVER SLEEP, EVERY NIGHT I’LL BE WITH YOU
THERE IS SO MUCH ON YOUR MIND THAT I DON’T KNOW
FEELS LIKE I’M ON FIRE, AND THE FLAMES HAVE GOT NO MERCY
THE FEVERS NEVER ENDING ALL IT SEEMS TO DO IS GROW

SARAH: THERE ARE TIMES I WANT TO RUN
TIMES I WANT TO HIDE
THINGS I’VE LEFT UNDONE
THINGS I CAST ASIDE
SO MANY THINGS TO TRY
SO MANY THINGS DENIED
ALFRED: THERE’S NO DENYING
SARAH: SOONER OR LATER, I WANTED TO RUN NOW
SOONER OR LATER, IT’S FINALLY COME NOW
HOW CAN WE FLY
LIKE THE ANGELS IN THE SACRED AIR
HIGHER AND HIGHER
ABOVE THE WORLD AND ALL ITS CARES

ALFRED: EVERYBODY’S READY TO FLY
BUT THE STORMS ARE NEVER SO VERY FAR
AND I WISH MY LIFE WAS SHINING LIKE A STAR
BUT THE FEARS ARE NEVER VERY FAR
AND WE ALWAYS SEEM SO MUCH BRAVER THAN WE ARE
WE ALWAYS DREAM WE’D BE BRAVER BUT WE NEVER ARE

SARAH: I NEED SO MUCH
ALFRED: I NEED YOUR TOUCH
SARAH: I AM SICK OF THIS PLACE AND THIS COLD
I DON’T WANT TO GET OLD WITHOUT LIVING
I AM TIRED DOING JUST WHAT I’M TOLD
I WANT MORE THAN WHAT ANYONE’S GIVING
ALFRED: I’VE WAITED FOREVER FOR NOW
SARAH: AND I NEED TO GO FAST; SHOW ME HOW
ALFRED: SO MANY DAYS HAVE BEEN LOST
SARAH: AND WE’VE BOTH PAID THE COST
ALFRED: THERE’S NOTHING TO BE SORRY FOR
SARAH: NOW WE CAN HAVE SO MUCH MORE
ALFRED: NOW I CAN BE CLOSE TO YOU
SARAH: NOTHING WE ARE SCARED TO DO

WE ALWAYS SEEM SO MUCH BRAVER THAN WE EVER ARE
WE ALWAYS DREAM WE’D BE BRAVER THAN WE EVER ARE
LET’S RUN AWAY, GO TOO FAR

A rhythmic pulse. A strange, ruby glow surrounds the Red boots and pulses – un-noticed by Alfred but seen by Sarah.

ALFRED: Sarah, what’s the matter? What’s the matter? You’re shivering
SARAH: I’ve got shivers down my spine. Alfred, will you get my scarf?
ALFRED: And then we’re off
SARAH: And then we’re off…

Alfred exits into the Inn. Sarah puts on the boots

SARAH: I WILL NEVER SLEEP
NOW MY HEART HAS BEEN AWAKENED
I FEEL THE YEARNING
FOR A SINGLE PERFECT TOUCH
I CAN’T AFFORD TO WAIT
OR THE MAGIC WILL BE TAKEN
I DON’T WANT TO LOSE;
THERE CAN NEVER BE TOO MUCH

THERE ARE TIMES I WANT TO RUN
TIMES I WANT TO HIDE
THINGS I’VE LEFT UNDONE
THINGS I CAST ASIDE
SO MANY THINGS TO TRY
SO MANY THINGS DENIED
AND NOW I KNOW IT’S SOONER OR LATER
I WANTED A CHANCE NOW
SOONER OR LATER IS HERE
I CAN DANCE NOW

Dance: The Red Boots Ballet

The entire Inn seems to explode outward, revealing the gorgeous vision of Sarah’s ballroom fantasy. Chandeliars swoop in and swirl. Dashing young vampires, men and women, dance in all formations – men with women, men with men, women with women. The music gets more feverish, her fantasy is getting out of control (a Dance Double for Sarah appears, as Sarah continues to sing, and soon a Krolock Double appears.) The dancing is virtuosic, high-pitched, ecstatic, stunning.

SARAH: WEIGHTLESSLY FREE
I’LL BE REBORN IF I ONLY DARE
THEY’LL BE NO MORE BOUNDARIES ANYWHERE

We hear Krolock’s Voice echoing around. Sarah looks around wildly for him.

KROLOCK’S VOICE: DO WHAT THEY WILL NEVER PERMIT
AND DON’T ASK IF YOU’LL REGRET IT TOMORROW

The dance continues.

SARAH: MY LIFE IS FINALLY SHINING LIKE A STAR
I CAN LEAVE THOSE FEARS RIGHT WERE THEY ARE
LEAVE THOSE FEARS RIGHT WHERE THEY ARE NOW
KROLOCK’S VOICE & SARAH: HOW CAN WE FLY LIKE THE NIGHT BIRDS IN THE DARKEST AIR
HIGHER AND HIGHER ABOVE THE WORLD AND ALL ITS CARES
WE RUN AWAY
SARAH: AWAY FROM HERE

There is a final instrumental statement as the Dancers exit rapturously in all directions. Many Krolock Doubles appear each dancing with Sarah in turn. Eventually she is bitten. The Doubles exit in a blur. Sarah is left onstage alone as the music changes dramatically.

SARAH (turning to the Inn): I’m sorry Alfred

She exits.
Alfred appears again.

ALFRED: I couldn’t find your scarf… Sarah? Sarah, no! Sarah, I… I love you

The Inn starts to empty. Rebecca and Magda come out panicking.

REBECCA: Sarah? Where is my Sarah?
ALFRED: She is gone
REBECCA: All you fools in Heaven, will you have no mercy?

Abronsius enters.

ABRONSIUS: We’ve lost him Alfred. He slipped right through us. What’s all this? What’s this?
ALFRED: Professor. Sarah is gone…
ABRONSIUS: He’s calling her, Alfred. She’s being drawn to the castle
ALFRED: We must get there before her! Not in the dark, not in this, no!
ABRONSIUS: Damnation!

Villagers spill out from behind the Inn, armed with flaming torches. A military atmosphere.

VILLAGER 1: I will lead you to the castle, sir
VILLAGER 2: I will too
VILLAGERS: So will we all!
REBECCA: Take me with you please?
MAGDA: Don’t leave me here, all alone!
VILLAGER: Just follow the light…

The song marks the journey to the castle von Krolock, the darkness is pierced by the lights of the torches.

WHEN TEMPTATION COMES TO CALL
THE SOUL CAN LOSE ITS WAY
AND THE ANGELS START TO FALL
ONLY PRAYER CAN SAVE THE DAY

SAY A PRAYER FOR THOSE WHO CRAWL
SAY A PRAYER FOR THOSE WHO RUN
SAY A PRAYER SO AFTER ALL
THERE’S A BETTER LIFE TO COME

SAY A PRAYER FOR THOSE ALONE
SAY A PRAYER FOR THOSE APART
ALL THOSE HUNGRY BOYS AND GIRLS
THEY’RE CRUSADERS OF THE HEART

SAY A PRAYER FOR ALL THE LOST
SAY A PRAYER FOR THE UNBORN
SAY A PRAYER FOR ALL THE YOUNG
IT TAKES A FIRE TO KEEP THEM WARM

SAY A PRAYER FOR THOSE OBSESSED
SAY A PRAYER FOR THOSE ENSLAVED
SAY A PRAYER FOR THEY’LL BE STRONG
FROM THE CRADLE TO THE GRAVE

SAY A PRAYER FOR ALL THE SAINTS
SAY A PRAYER FOR ALL THE SINS
LET THE DANCING NEVER END
LET THE FUTURE NOW BEGIN

SAY A PRAYER TO ALL THE GODS
SOME ARE NEAR AND SOME ARE FAR
SAY A PRAYER TO ALL THE GODS
MAKE US BRAVER THAN WE ARE

The scene magically changes to the front gates of the castle.

Scene SIX

Sarah rushes on, frightened. Unknown to her she is being watched by vampires. Krolock appears.

KROLOCK: COME WITH ME AND BLESS THE NIGHT
LET THE DARKNESS BE YOUR SALVATION
CURSE THE DAY, ESCAPE THE LIGHT
BREAK THE CHAINS OF IMAGINATION

COME WITH ME AND YOU’LL KNOW LOVE
WE WILL SHOW YOU AND WE WILL TEACH YOU
TAKE MY HAND AND LEARN FROM US
WE WILL TOUCH YOU AND WE WILL REACH YOU
AND YOU WILL LIVE FOREVER
YOU WILL LIVE FOREVERMORE
FOREVERMORE…

He lifts Sarah into his arms. The Villagers appear, too late.

ALFRED: Too late! No! Professor, we’re too late!

Music soars ecstatically. Krolock’s eyes sparkle with the glow of triumph, then his face glares with majestic power and excited anticipation. Surrounded by an awesome battalion of lights. Krolock enters the inner sanctum, the heavy doors close behind him.

The curtain falls.

END OF ACT ONE

ACT TWO

Scene ONE

Curtain up on Sarah in the castles gallery. It is the middle of the night. Behind her a staircase decorated with skulls and candles (unlit for the moment) watching eyes, Vampire Shadows. Even the portraits have a life of their own.

SARAH: Hello? Hello Mr Von Krolock? I’ve lost my way, are you there?

(TURN AROUND…)

SARAH: EVERY NOW AND THEN I GET A LITTLE BIT LONELY
AND I DON’T KNOW WHAT I MISS

(TURN AROUND…)

EVERY NOW AND THEN I GET A LITTLE BIT ANXIOUS
AND I WONDER WHAT IT IS I DESIRE

(TURN AROUND…)

EVERY NOW AND THEN I GET A LITTLE BIT NERVOUS
THAT THE TIME OF WAITING WILL NEVER END

(TURN AROUND…)

EVERY NOW AND THEN I GET A LITTLE BIT TERRIFIED
AND DRAWN BY SOMETHING I CAN’T WITHSTAND

(TURN AROUND, BRIGHT EYES…)

EVERY NOW AND THEN, I HEAR A VOICE

(TURN AROUND, BRIGHT EYES…)

EVERY NOW AND THEN, I HEAR…

(TURN AROUND…)

EVERY NOW AND THEN I GET A LITTLE BIT RESTLESS
AND I DREAM OF SOMETHING WILD

(TURN AROUND…)

EVERY NOW AND THEN I GET A LITTLE HELPLESS
AND I’M LONGING LIKE A CHILD TO BE LOVED

(TURN AROUND…)

EVERY NOW AND THEN I GET A LITTLE BIT CURIOUS
WHAT IT’S LIKE TO BE A WOMAN AND FREE

(TURN AROUND…)

EVERY NOW AND THEN I GET A LITTLE BIT TERRIFIED
OF ALL THE HAZARDS WAITING FOR ME

(TURN AROUND, BRIGHT EYES…)

EVERY NOW AND THEN, I HEAR A VOICE

(TURN AROUND, BRIGHT EYES…)

EVERY NOW AND THEN, I HEAR A VOICE

Krolock appears atop the staircase. As he descends the candles light.

KROLOCK: TURN AROUND, THIS IS THE NIGHT
NOW I NEED YOU MORE THAN EVER
AND IF YOU’LL ONLY HOLD ME TIGHT
WE’LL BE HOLDING ON FOREVER
AND WE’LL ONLY BE MAKING IT RIGHT
CAUSE WE’LL NEVER BE WRONG
TOGETHER WE CAN TAKE IT TO THE END OF THE LINE
MY LOVE IS LIKE A SHADOW ON YOU ALL OF THE TIME

I DON’T KNOW WHAT TO DO
AND I’M ALWAYS IN THE DARK
SARAH: I FEEL IT LIKE A POWDER KEG AWAITING THE SPARK
BOTH: I REALLY NEED YOU TONIGHT
FOREVER’S GONNA START TONIGHT
FOREVER’S GONNA START TONIGHT

SARAH: ONCE UPON A TIME I DREAMED OF FALLING IN LOVE
NOW I’M SCARED OF FALLING APART
KROLOCK: THERE’S NOTHING YOU CAN DO
A TOTAL ECLIPSE OF THE HEART

(TURN AROUND…)

SARAH: EVERY NOW AND THEN I THINK I’D BETTER RUN AWAY FROM YOU
BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE

(TURN AROUND…)

BOTH: BUT EVERY NOW AND THEN I KNOW I/YOU MUST GO WHERE I/YOU LEAD ME/YOU
YOU’LL/I’LL GO WITH YOU/ME THROUGH THE GATES OF HELL

SARAH: EVERY NOW AND THEN I KNOW THERE’S NO ONE IN THE UNIVERSE
AS MAGICAL AND WOND’ROUS AS YOU

BOTH: EVERY NOW AND THEN I KNOW THERE’S NOTHING ANY BETTER
AND THERE’S NOTHING THAT I JUST WOULDN’T DO

(TURN AROUND, BRIGHT EYES…)

SARAH: EVERY NOW AND THEN I HEAR A VOICE

(TURN AROUND, BRIGHT EYES…)

BOTH: NOW YOU KNOW I NEVER HAD A CHOICE

AND I NEED YOU NOW TONIGHT
AND I NEED YOU MORE THAN EVER
AND IF YOU’LL ONLY HOLD ME TIGHT
WE’LL BE HOLDING ON FOREVER
AND WE’LL ONLY BE MAKING IT RIGHT
CAUSE WE’LL NEVER BE WRONG
TOGETHER WE CAN TAKE IT TO THE END OF THE LINE
MY LOVE IS LIKE A SHADOW ON YOU ALL OF THE TIME

KROLOCK: I DON’T KNOW WHAT TO DO
AND I’M ALWAYS IN THE DARK
SARAH: I FEEL IT LIKE A POWDER KEG AWAITING THE SPARK
BOTH: I REALLY YOU NEED YOU TONIGHT
FOREVER’S GONNA START TONIGHT
FOREVER’S GONNA START TONIGHT

SARAH: ONCE I DREAMED OF FALLING IN LOVE
NOW I’M SCARED OF FALLING APART
KROLOCK: THERE’S NOTHING YOU CAN DO
A TOTAL ECLIPSE OF THE HEART
ONCE UPON A TIME, LIFE WAS SIMPLE AND BRIGHT
SARAH: NOW THERE’S ONLY LAYERS OF DARK
BOTH: THERE’S NOTHING YOU CAN DO
A TOTAL ECLIPSE OF THE HEART
KROLOCK: THERE’S NOTHING YOU CAN DO
SARAH: A TOTAL ECLIPSE OF THE HEART

He moves his teeth toward her neck, but restrains himself.

KROLOCK: NO! NO! TONIGHT, AT THE BALL!
SARAH: THERE’S NOTHING I CAN DO
A TOTAL ECLIPSE OF THE HEART

Blackout.

In the darkness we see the figure of Alfred enter.

ALFRED: Three thirty-six am. We have arrived at the castle, but I cannot find Sarah and I’ve lost the professor. I’m writting this in total darkness, apparently on my hand…

Abronsius too enters. The two bump into each other. The lights come up to reveal our fearless vampire killers.

ABRONSIUS: Alfred!
ALFRED: Professor!
ABRONSIUS: Have you ever seen such a dreadful maze?
ALFRED: Does the devil know we’re here?

Unknown to the two, Krolock has entered behind Abronsius.

ABRONSIUS: No. We slipped right by him at the gate. A dilemma, Alfred. For we find ourselves in this infernal castle, not in daylight but at night when a… a… you know…
KROLOCK: Vampire?
ABRONSIUS: Vampire will be on the prowl. We must secret ourselves till dawn, then we must find the crypt where he is secreted and drive this stake through his fiendish…
KROLOCK: Visitors! Bon osair!

The Two turn, startled to find Krolock.

ABRONSIUS: Oh, hello…
KROLOCK: Scrumptuous! I am the count Giovanni Von Krolock
ABRONSIUS: Pardon us for intruding at such an hour, your excellency
KROLOCK: Please. I am a night bird. I wear the darkness as a magician wears his cape
ALFRED (secretly to Abronsius): Kill him, professor
ABRONSIUS (back at Alfred, too through his teeth): I can’t, it’s not daytime and he’s not asleep!
KROLOCK: With whom do I have the pleasure?
ABRONSIUS: I am Abronbsius of Heidelberg
KROLOCK: Not professor Abronsius?
ABRONSIUS (in alarm): You’ve heard of me?
KROLOCK: Of course. Your book on bats. Why when I finished, those bats felt like family
ALFRED (finally erupting): You dog! You butcher! If you touch Sarah, you’ll rot for ten eternities in Hell!
KROLOCK: Bravo! And who is this impetuous young gallort?
ABRONSIUS: This is Alfred, my factotum
KROLOCK: Oh, yes. A picallo Alfredo! A sensitive young passion flower. You must meet my son, Herbert. Herbert!
ABRONSIUS: Aha! So there is two of them!

Herbert, the counts gay son appears from the darkness.

HERBERT: Well, well. Bonsoir!
KROLOCK: Herbert could use a good factotum!
HERBERT (boldly flirtatious): If that means what I think it means you can stay forever! Oh, father you are too good to me…
KROLOCK: I’m a sentimental fool, my boy. Now go back to your room
HERBERT: I’ll be in my bourdoir, Mr Factotum. If you desire, too

Herbert blows Alfred a kiss, which he dodges.

KROLOCK: I think he likes you! Now what brings you gentlemen to me?
ABRONSIUS: Ah, we happen to be touring the sights of Transylvania, and we… lost our way
KROLOCK: Boris! You’ve met my valet?
ABRONSIUS (aside): The valet of the shadow of death

Boris enters. He is now dressed like a butler.

BORIS: Yes, master!
KROLOCK: He will show you to your chambers. Gentlemen. Unless you wish to go?
ABRONSIUS: No
ALFRED: No
ALFRED/ABRONSIUS: We’ll stay
KROLOCK: The choice is yours. Bless the generous darkness that spilled you at my door. Who knows what other delights the darkness holds in store…

Alfred, with a look of hatred at Krolock, accompanies Abronsius as Boris leads them off to their bedrooms. The three disapear.

Scene TWO

Alfred’s bedroom. In a huge four-poster bed, Alfred tosses in his sleep. Alfred has a nightmare that begins as the Vampires appear from above and beneath the bed and dance out his dream. Even the carvings of the bedposts come to life. The dance is in the tradition of film-noir-like dance nightmares. At the core of the nightmare, Alfred dreams that a Sarah Double is seduced by a Krolock Double. A Mysterious Voice sings from within this dark.

A MYSTERIOUS VOICE: COME WITH ME AND BLESS THE NIGHT
LET THE DARKNESS BE YOUR SALVATION
CURSE THE DAY ESCAPE THE LIGHT
BREAK THE CHAINS OF IMAGINATION

COME WITH ME AND SEIZE THE NIGHT
NOW’S THE TIME FOR SOME INSPIRATION
LEAVE THE DAY AND LOOSE THE NIGHT
NO TABOO’S ONLY NEW SENSATIONS

IN THE SHADOWS OF THE CASTLE
A HERO’S WAITING FOR THE CALL
AND ALL THE DEVILS ARE WAKING UP
AND ALL THE ANGELS START TO FALL

IN THE SHADOWS OF THE CASTLE
THEY’RE DYING FOR A THRILL
THEY’RE GOING OUT OVER THE EDGE
THEY’RE MOVING IN FOR THE KILL

YOU GOTTA CURSE THE DAY
ITS NOTHING BUT A MERCILESS LIGHT
SO OPEN UP YOUR ARMS
AND GET DOWN ON YOUR KNEES
SUCK IN ALL THE DARKNESS
AND YOUR READY NOW TO SEIZE
SEIZE THE NIGHT
SEIZE THE NIGHT

BLESS THE NIGHT
BEFORE IT HAS A CHANCE TO PASS
SEIZE THE NIGHT
YOU DO WHAT IT TAKES TO MAKE IT LAST

BLESS THE NIGHT
SEIZE THE NIGHT
SEIZE THE NIGHT RIGHT NOW

LET YOUR DREAMS OUT OF THERE CAGES
EVERY PASSION AND DESIRE
LET YOUR VISIONS BE OUTRAGEOUS
SET YOUR FANTASIES ON FIRE

EVERYTHING WILL BE PERMITTED
THERE WILL BE NOTHING LEFT TO FEAR
I’VE GOT THE MAGIC IN YOUR BODY
YOUR INHIBITIONS DISAPPEAR

Alfred tries to interfere but in the climax of the dance he and the Sarah Dancer are bitten.

YOU GOTTA CURSE THE DAY
ITS NOTHING BUT A MERCILESS LIGHT
SO OPEN UP YOUR ARMS
AND GET DOWN ON YOUR KNEES
SUCK IN ALL THE DARKNESS
AND YOUR READY NOW TO SEIZE
SEIZE THE NIGHT
SEIZE THE NIGHT

BLESS THE NIGHT
BEFORE IT HAS A CHANCE TO PASS
SEIZE THE NIGHT
YOU DO WHAT IT TAKES TO MAKE IT LAST…

As the music ends, he sits up in bed, terrified.

ALFRED: No… ! Sarah! No!

The Vampires disintegrate

They’re gone. It’s over. Just a dream – I hope…

THERE ARE GHOSTS IN THE AIR
EVIL EYES IN THE DARKNESS
AS I SEARCH FOR SARAH

DEMONS LURK EVERYWHERE
BUT HOWEVER MUCH THEY SCARE ME
I WILL NOT BE DETERRED
I’LL BE TOUGH
I’LL BE SLY
THERE IS NOTHING I WOULD NOT DO OR BE
FOR SARAH

I WILL STEAL
I WILL LIE
THERE IS NOTHING I WON’T TRY
TO FIND AND SAVE HER

THERE’S A DREAM
THERE’S SONG
HOW I LONG TO GO BACK
BUT I MUST STAY
FOR SARAH

THROUGH THIS NIGHTMARES I GO
DESPERATE, SHATTERED. LONELY
BUT I MUST NOT BE FAR
I WILL SLASH
I WILL BURN
THERE’S NOTHING I WOULD NOT DO OR BE
FOR SARAH

THERE’S NO STONE I WON’T TURN
I’D DO ANYTHING IT TAKES TO FIND AND HOLD HER

I’LL BE BOLD
I’LL BE BRAVE
THERE IS NOTHING I WOULD NOT BE FOR YOU
FOR SARAH
I WOULD GO TO THE GRAVE
LIKE A SACRIFICIAL ANGEL
I WILL NOT LET YOU FALL

I WILL FIGHT ALL MY FEARS
THERE IS NOTHING I WOULD NOT DO FOR YOU
OH SARAH

TAKE THIS BLOOD SWEATING TEARS
TAKE THIS SACRIFICIAL ANGEL
WHO WILL SAVE YOU
SARAH!

ABRONSIUS: Oh, noble youth. You know, Alfred, I too danced the great polka in cupids beer garden
ALFRED: You? You, professor?
ABRONSIUS: And I give you my word. For you and your Sarah, the great polka will never end
ALFRED: God bless you, professor Abronsius!
ABRONSIUS: He already has my boy! Through you

A clock chime rings out

ABRONSIUS: Sweet slovania! We’ve slept right through the day. Only two hours until sunset!
ALFRED: The total eclipse of the moon
ABRONSIUS: Tonight. Three minutes before dawn

Alfred begins to get dressed.

ALFRED: We have to find Sarah
ABRONSIUS: No! First we must find the crypt, where those two creatures are coffined
ALFRED: And the prophecy, professor? What happens if Sarah lets him bite her?
ABRONSIUS: The prophecy. Yes, ultimately Alfred… Ultimately…
ALFRED: Yes professor?
ABRONSIUS: There’s no time now, I’ll tell you later
ALFRED: Oh, dear God. Slow down the moon!
ABRONSIUS: Alfred, those two vampires aren’t getting any younger. Come to think of it they aren’t getting any older either. To the crypt!

Scene THREE

THE SEARCH THROUGH THE CASTLE: ORCHESTRAL SEQUENCE

By the use of shifting projections and moving set-pieces, Alfred and Abronsius descend mazelike stairways and explore the labyrinth corridors of the castle, we should get the sense that the castle itself has a life of its own as walls and sconces come to life. Alfred and Abronsius are in near darkness throughout the sequence. Alfred leading the way carrying a bizarre, lighted candelbrum. Musical underscoring maintains the mood of ghostliness and dread and black humour. The search will come to nothing, eventually our characters will find they are going round in circles.

ABRONSIUS: This way, quickly Alfred!

Again the scene shifts around Alfred and Abronsius as they penetrate deeper into the castle. The underscoring becomes more intense.

ABRONSIUS: Faster Alfred, we haven’t much time!

They move on through multiplying shadows and corridors. Music continues, eventually they come against a wall.

ABRONSIUS: Confounded, Alfred! It’s hopeless. How are we going to ever find that crypt in this damnable, impassable labyrinth?

A luminous sign flashes "CRYPT" with an arrow pointing down.

ALFRED: Oh, no. A dead end!
ABRONSIUS: Oh, well. Let’s give it a try…

A trap door activates and the two descend into:

Blackout. Scene change.

Scene FOUR

The castle’s crypt. A raised, ornate coffin at centre. Two at each side, one open. Above the stage, a raised gallery where Alfred and Abronsius appear.

ABRONSIUS: Ah ha. This looks pretty cryptic.

They start to climb down.

And there they lie, vampiricus and homo-vampiricus. We have to work fast!

ALFRED: Let me, professor. I’ll pound this stake through his foul heart. Now die Lucifer!

We jump as a hand suddenly reaches out from behind the coffin and grabs Alfred’s throat. He lets out a cry, and struggles. Chagal staggers into view. His hand around Alfred’s throat. He is now dead pale – eyes crazed – flesh blood spilling down his front from his mouth.

Mr Chagal!

ABRONSIUS: Oh, there he is
ALFRED: Mr Chagal!

Chagal topples and falls into the open coffin, the lid closing.

ABRONSIUS: Great Gulliter! Alfred, my watch has stopped!
ALFRED: Stopped? Stopped when?
ABRONSIUS: Five forty-two
ALFRED: Five forty, five forty-two?
ABRONSIUS: Five forty-two. Which means the sun has already set
ALFRED (indicating Krolock’s coffin): What about this coffin?
ABRONSIUS: Yes… yes. And…

He throws open the coffin. Big chord from the orchestra.

ALFRED: Empty!
ABRONSIUS: Empty! So Krolock and son are open for business
ALFRED (indicating Chagal’s coffin): Well, here’s one vampire we can kill

They open the coffin. Alfred raises his stake to strike, then…

REBECCA (entering with Magda): No stop! Get away from that man!
ABRONSIUS: Madame, this is the only way!
REBECCA: God bless his immortal soul. That is my husband and nobody saves his immortal soul, but me…

We hear Sarah’s melody off. Alfred looks up.

ALFRED: That voice… ?
ABRONSIUS: What voice? Alfred, what do you hear? No, no my boy! Wait!

Alfred is already gone. Abronsius turns to Rebecca, handing her his stake.

Madame you’ll find the heart five ribs down on the left, and remember: Swing through the stake. Alfred!

Abronsius exits.

REBECCA: Okay… So five ribs down on what side? On the right side? I guess we use the pointy end…

Rebecca holds the stake over Chagal’s heart. Chagal rises, going for Magda.

MAGDA (holding up crucifix): Stay away! Stay away. Jesus protect me!
CHAGAL (thick Jewish accent): Oy, have you got the wrong vampire?

He bites Magda, and sucks hungrily. She falls lifeless from his arms. Then focuses his attention on Rebecca.

REBECCA: Chagal… Chagal I do not want to die
CHAGAL: How do you know until you try it?

He lunges forward, biting her. Magda rises.

MAGDA: Rebecca, are you alright?
REBECCA: I think so… That was amazing!

ALL THOSE YEARS OF ENDLESS BOREDOM
WE DID NOTHING, WE ENDURED THEM

WHO KNEW DEATH COULD BE THIS HOT?

WHO WOULD OF NOTICED?
IT TAKES AWAY YOUR BREATH
THE ANSWER TO THE QUESTION
IS THERE SEX AFTER DEATH?

DEATH IS SUCH AN ODD THING
DEATH IS SUCH AN ODD THING

The Three sink into Chagal’s coffin. The lid closes, but not before a "Do Not Disturb" sign is hung.

Blackout. Scene change.

During the scene change: Alfred searches the castle, following Sarah’s melody and glimpsing her again and again (through the use of Sarah Doubles) Always just missing her.

ALFRED: Sarah?

Then Sarah goes behind a particion and Alfred pursures her, close behind…

Voice from behind particion sings Sarah’s melody

ALFRED: Sarah? Is that you?

Instead of Sarah, Herbert steps into view.

Scene FIVE

A vampire parody of a teenage boy’s room. A wall of bats hung up like school pennants. Weights. Armor.

HERBERT: Don’t you hate this castle? You never know where you are. Hello again
ALFRED: Hello
HERBERT: Do you want to see my room?
ALFRED (trying to get past): Actually I was looking for a friend
HERBERT (blocking Alfred’s way): I’ll be your friend
ALFRED: A… A different friend
HERBERT: I am different. Let’s be different together.
ALFRED: Excuse me?
HERBERT: You and I. We’re petals on the same funeral wreath. Neatly, lonely, acne. We both hate our names
ALFRED: How did you know that?
HERBERT: Try Herbert! It’s been un-cool for three hundered years. Those are my bats. You wanna see my balls?
ALFRED: Maybe some other time…
HERBERT: I would. I bet you sit up late reading Shiller
ALFRED: I read Shiller
HERBERT: Kant drives you crazy?
ALFRED: Totally insane…
HERBERT (a book flings itself into his hands and he hands it to Alfred): Don’t get me started! Here’s what I’m reading
ALFRED: We’re here. We’re dead. Get used to it
HERBERT: Sorry. Wrong book

Another book flings itself.

ALFRED: Sucking for dummies
HERBERT: Sorry. Wrong book

Another book flings itself.

ALFRED: When love is inside you Look, I’m straight. I’m catholic. I’m alive. Yet I do find you strangely attractive
HERBERT: Read a page. See if it doesn’t move you

WHEN LOVE IS INSIDE YOU
DON’T EVER BE AFRAID
JUST LET YOUR HEART GUIDE YOU
YOU’RE FEARS WILL BE ALLAYED

FOR THE ONE YOU ADORE
JUST CANNOT IGNORE
THE LIGHT IN YOUR EYES
THAT LIGHT SIGNIFIES
LOVE IS INSIDE YOU
AND NOW IT STARTS TO RISE

DON’T BE TO SHY TO LET YOUR ROMANCE BEGIN
WHEN PASSIONS IGNITE YOU, YOU CANNOT LOCK THEM IN
SHOW THE ONE YOU ADMIRE THAT YOU ARE ON FIRE
THEN CHASE AWAY ANY KIND OF DOUBT
WHEN LOVE IS INSIDE YOU, YOU’VE GOT TO LET IT OUT

YOU MUST NOT BE FRIGHTENED
DEAR FRIEND I’M ON YOUR SIDE
YOU BLUSH CAN IT BE THAT YOU’RE ILL?
I’M NOT ILL, I DON’T BLUSH
YES YOU DO, YOU’RE DISHEVELLED AND FLUSH

YOU MUST GET SOME REST NOW
RIGHT HERE ON MY BREAST NOW
YOU SHAKE, CAN IT BE THAT YOU ARE SCARED?
I’M NOT SCARED, I DON’T SHAKE
YES YOU DO, I’M CONCERNED FOR YOUR SAKE

ALFRED :ISN’T THERE SOME KIND OF HAPPENING TONIGHT?
HERBERT:YOU ARE SUCH A RAVISHING SIGHT
ALFRED :I’M NOT
HERBERT:BEAUTIFUL LASHES
ALFRED :MY LASHES?
HERBERT:PHENOMENAL
THEY LOOK LIKE WONDERFUL THREADS OF GOLD

WE’LL HAVE A GLORIOUS TIME TONIGHT
HANDCUFFS AND WINE AND CANDLELIGHT
AND WE’LL BE DANCING, ROMANCING
MY INNERMOST DREAMS WILL COME TRUE
WHEN I’M DEEP INTO YOU

WHAT IS IT YOU’RE FEELING?
CONFUSED, IT MUST BE ME
YOUR BANANA IS PEELING
YOU ARE IN LOVE I SEE
AH YES, WELL I’M IN LOVE TOO
IN LOVE WITH GUESS WHO?
YES ALFRED WITH YOU

Alfred sees that Herbert’s reflection is not cast in the mirror.

WHEN LOVE IS INSIDE YOU
YOU’VE GOT TO LET IT
LET IT OUT

Herbert bends to bite Alfred’s neck, and Alfred inserts the book between Herbert’s open jaws, temporarily stopping him. They wrestle on the floor and Alfred gets away
Forlorn, heartsick, Herbert exits.

Scene change.

Scene SIX

Sarah’s room. A parody of a teenage princess’ room. Strange toys. Weird stuffed animals. Sarah is luxuriating in a bubble bath.

ALFRED’S VOICE (off): Sarah, where are you?

Sarah’s melody.
Alfred enters the room.

ALFRED: Sarah, Sarah? Oh, thank God! Thank God you’re alive!
SARAH: Hello Alfred. Do you always barge in on a woman bathing?
ALFRED: Oh, I’m sorry

He turns around. Sarah steps behind the partition to change into a robe.

SARAH: What are you doing here? Did you come for the ball?
ALFRED: The ball? I’m here to rescue you
SARAH: Rescue me? From what? I’m not a prisoner. Don’t you just love this room?
ALFRED: No. No Sarah. He’s hypnotised you!
SARAH (lifting the red dress from the bed): Look at the gown I’m going to wear tonight. Isn’t that gorgeous?
ALFRED: Sarah, he’s brainwashed you. Don’t you see?
SARAH: Don’t you see? I have been chosen for something
ALFRED: Yes. To be his victim!
SARAH: No! To be really alive. I don’t need to be saved. I’ve been saved right here, tonight
ALFRED: You mean you would give yourself to him?
SARAH: Yes I would. Freely. Gladly. Come what may!
ALFRED: Then my life is meaningless, this world is meaningless, and all those who have loved are fools
SARAH: I’m sorry, Alfred. I’m very sorry. Leave me. Goodbye…

Alfred sadly turns to go.

ALFRED: Sarah, nothing will change the way I feel about you. And nothing ever will…

Alfred exits.

SARAH (realising): What have I done? What am I doing?

Sarah turns to pursue Alfred but Madame von Krolock has entered and blocks her way.

MME. VON KROLOCK: The time is now my dear. Time for the blood red ball we’ve been dreaming of…

Sarah turns to go another way.

SARAH (calling): Alfred!

Zsa Zsa and Nadja, now Vampire brides, block Sarah.

GIRLS: Hi, Sarah…

Blackout. Scene change.

Scene SEVEN

The library, an escher of books. Abronsius is looking at them when Krolock appears behind him.

KROLOCK: How do you like my library, professor?
ABRONSIUS: Mein Gott! The collectiana Krolockania!
KROLOCK: Every book ever written
ABRONSIUS: Every book?
KROLOCK: Every book
ABRONSIUS: Heraclitus and Empedocles?
KROLOCK: Of course
ABRONSIUS: Nikomachos, Diogenes?
KROLOCK: Stay here professor. Read them all
ABRONSIUS: Where would I ever have the time?
KROLOCK: Here in eternity, my gift to you – if you’ll accept it
ABRONSIUS (realising what Krolock is proposing): Eternity? … A gift? No – no, never
KROLOCK: You’re not a well man, professor – how much time do you have left?
ABRONSIUS: Six months, they say
KROLOCK: Well I can give you endless time, and what about that dream you have?
ABRONSIUS: Dream… ?
KROLOCK: That nightly dream you can’t escape from. You’re lost. Lost and wandering
KROLOCK & ABRONSIUS: … Far and wide, finally…
ABRONSIUS (recalling in a sort of trance): … Finally I come to a beach at the edge of the ocean, it seems as if the bright sun-white sky has shed the black ocean like a winter skin. Everything is so clear. I lie down on the sand and try to remember what it felt like to be young. I try to reassemble my youth in my mind, my brilliant mind. But it won’t come back to my mind – because, after all, that’s not where it happened. It happened in my body, in my flesh and guts and my blood. And now all I can feel is the sands of the beach running out beneath me
KROLOCK: I taught at Hindelberg in 1606. I was you, professor. Now look at us. I, a thriving Mephistopheles, and you, a dying Faust. With your chance for true immortality. Why do you think you came here?
ABRONSIUS: And if I accept your offer, I victimise the poor and defenseless, I live off the living, to suck them dry. Like you
KROLOCK: There’s always a price
ABRONSIUS: And you think that I, Abronsius of Heidelberg, would twist my principles to pay it? So that I, too could rip open the throat of–say–a poor preachers daughter

seeing Krolock’s surprise

Oh yes, I’ve done my research. There were jornals. Diaries. Books. Did that innocent child remind you of something you would never have?
KROLOCK: How dare you…
ABRONSIUS: What about that blinded soldier who befriended you? Did he see something you could not, is that why you took him? That elegant lady who made lace – did she have a purpose in life you had lost?
KROLOCK: How dare you!
ABRONSIUS: No, sir. How dare you! You want me to be this? Like you? Killing the things you pretend to love? Destroying what you can never be?
KROLOCK: And what is that, pray?
ABRONSIUS: Alive. Truly alive – Because I am mortal. A creature who knows beauty because he will die. A being with a purpose because time is running out. An animal enjoying the light because he faces endless dark. You have nothing but darkness
KROLOCK: Get out of my sight!
ABRONSIUS: You pollute the earth! You are a crime against nature!

Alfred enters, still upset from his encounter with Sarah.

I consecrate myself to the quest of my good friend Alfred: To preserve one drop of purity in the filth of this world, and eradicate you!
KROLOCK: But what of the hundreds in the castle graveyard? Will you eradicate all of them?
ALFRED & KROLOCK: Hundreds… ?
KROLOCK: Of my fellow creatures – Rest in peace, professor

Scene EIGHT

The castle graveyard. One of the gravestones begins to move, then another. One by one, the Vampires crawl out of their graves and in an elaborate dance they come alive as if they were frozen and are thawing out, coming alive bit by bit from a deep sleep, forming an exultent Group.

VAMPIRES: ETERNITY
ISN’T ALL IT’S CALLED UP TO BE
A CIRCLE OF CIRCLES
AN ENDLESS ENCORE
NO FUTURE, NO PAST
JUST RECURRING RECURRENCE
NOTHING FRESH, OR UNTOUCHED
JUST THE SAME LAME ETERNITY
NOTHING NEW, IN THE GAME
JUST THE SAME PAIN IN THE ASS OF ETERNITY

ETERNITY
IS A HORRIBLE NUISANCE
WE’RE TREADING THE TREADMILL
THAT NEVER MOVES ON
NO FUTURE, NO PAST
JUST RECURRING RECURRENCE
NO SALVATION, NO SOUL
IN THE BLACK HOLE OF ETERNITY
WE GOT STYLE, WE GOT CLASS
BUT WE’RE STUCK IN THE MORASS OF ETERNITY!

OPEN THE GATES
TO THE ABYSS OF HORROR
LET’S TEACH THE MORTALS
WHO’S RUNNING THE WORLD
LET’S TORTURE THEIR SOULS
WITH REVULSION AND TERROR
LET THEM FEEL THE POWER AND THE GLORY
THE GLORY OF HELLFIRE
HELLFIRE, HELLFIRE, HELLFIRE, HELLFIRE!

The Vampires exit. Alfred and Abronsius appear, horrified at the sight they have just beheld.

ALFRED: My God, professor. What do we do? Where do we go?
ABRONSIUS: I don’t know, Alfred. I confess I’m completely lost…
ALFRED: And the prophecy, professor? What happens if Sarah is bitten?
ABRONSIUS: Yes, it’s time you knew. Well it’s quite simple really. They conquer the earth

Krolock appears.

KROLOCK: You should never have come here! Now you will never leave!

Krolock moves sinisterly toward Alfred, who cowers behind Abronsius.

KROLOCK: Shall I do you now? Or do you later?
ABRONSIUS (removing cross and pointing it at Krolock, who cowers in its presence): Back, serpent! Leave Alfred, go!

Alfred exits quickly. Abronsius still keeps the cross bared.

ABRONSIUS: Will you spare the poor child, Krolock? Will you surrender?
KROLOCK: She will become my queen…
ABRONSIUS: According to the prophecy?
KROLOCK: Yes
ABRONSIUS: Well I have a prophecy of my own. Tonight you will meet with extinction. You and all your wretched kind. So prepare excellency!

Abronsius exits.

KROLOCK: WELL, ALRIGHT, NO STARS TONIGHT
THE MOON MUST HIDE
CAN’T BEAR TO SEE MY FACE
SO MANY MOONS HAVE PASSED
SO MANY SUNS GONE DOWN
TOO MUCH BLOOD UNDER THE BRIDGE
TOO MANY WORLDS TURNED UPSIDE DOWN

THE SKIES WERE PURE AND THE FIELDS WERE GREEN
THE FADING SUMMER, SIXTEEN-SEVENTEEN
THE FIRST TIME I EVER DREW BLOOD
SHE WAS SUCH A BEAUTIFUL AND INNOCENT CHILD
SHE NEVER KNEW MY SOUL WAS CURSED FOR GOOD
I FOUGHT TO OVERCOME MY THIRST I THOUGHT I COULD
BUT WHEN I KISSED HER LIPS THEN I HAD NO CONTROL
AND THE FURIES ALL RAN WILD

AND WHEN I GRASPED FOR LIFE
I ALWAYS KILLED THE THINGS FOR WHICH I YEARNED
I WISH TO BE A FLAME AND REDUCE TO ASHES
BUT I HAVE NEVER BURNED
I LONG TO FLY IN TOTAL FREEDOM
AND YET THESE CHAINS KEEP DRAGGING ME DOWN
I WANT TO BE AN ANGEL OR THE DEVIL HIMSELF
BUT I AM NOTHING BUT A CREATURE LONGING FOR THINGS I CAN’T HAVE

THE PREACHER’S DAUGHTER LET ME IN HER ROOM
IN SEVENTEEN THIRTY-TWO, TO LOVE ME WAS HER DOOM
WITH HER SILKEN BLOOD I WROTE A POEM OF LOVE
UPON HER IVORY SKIN
AND THE BASHFUL PAGE OF NAPOLEON THE GREAT
IN EIGHTEEN HUNDRED THIRTEEN HE STOOD AT THE GATE
WHEN I RECALL HIS BODY I CAN’T HELP BUT THINK
TO CONSUME HIM WAS A SIN

SO MANY VICTIMS WASHING ON THE SHORES
AN OCEAN OF PURE TEARS
SO MANY PLEAS FOR MERCY, HOWLS OF PAIN
INTOXICATING FEARS
I USED MY BODY JUST LIKE A BANDAGE
I USED THEIR BODIES JUST LIKE A WOUND
AND I’LL NEVER KNOW WHERE THEY DISAPPEARED
BUT I CAN SEE THEM RISING UP OUT MY MEMORIES NOW
JUST LIKE THE DEMONS RISING UP FROM A TOMB!

AND THERE IS NO WAY EVER TO APOLOGIZE
REPENT OR MAKE AMENDS
NO RELEASE AND NO REDEMPTION
THE HUNGER NEVER ENDS

THERE ARE THOSE WHO BELIEVE IN SCIENCE
AND THOSE WHO BELIEVE IN ART
THERE ARE THOSE WHO BELIEVE IN POWER AND WEALTH
OR LOVE AND MATTERS OF THE HEART
THERE ARE THOSE WHO BELIEVE IN VARIOUS GODS
IN NATIONS, AND KNOWLEDGE
IN HELL AND IN HEAVEN
THE POWERS OF DARKNESS
THE ASSUMPTION OF THE LIGHT
BUT I BELIEVE IN JUST ONE GOD
THAT OF ENDLESS AND INSATIABLE
IMMORAL AND DESTRUCTIBLE
AND ALL CONSUMING APPETITE

THERE IS A PREDICTION THAT I NOW WILL MAKE
AND I’M SURE IT WILL BE RIGHT:
WHEN THE NEXT MILLENNIUM FINALLY COMES
THE GOD MOST WORSHIPED IN THIS WORLD
WILL BE THE GOD OF APPETITE

During the final moments of Krolocks soliloquy, the scene magically changes to the Ballroom.

Scene NINE

The Ballroom. We see Alfred and Abronsius lying in wait as the Vampires enter two by two as if to a diplomatic gala, in ancient costume and high wigs.

ALFRED (approaching two newly arrived Vampires): Excuse me? May I speak to you for a moment?

Alfred and Abronsius grab them, and reappear moments later in their costumes.

HERBERT: This is too fabulous…
ABRONSIUS: Remember Alfred. The eclipse happens three minutes before dawn. We must hold them off till sunrise
ALFRED: How do we do that?
ABRONSIUS (going into his pocket): Easily, with this cross.

nothing

This cross… I had the cross a minute ago… I…

ALFRED: You don’t have your cross?
ABRONSIUS: You have a cross
ALFRED: I gave you my cross
ABRONSIUS: Oh dear, Alfred
ALFRED: Professor, what do we do? If Sarah’s bitten…

Krolock appears, greeting his Vampire guests, Alfred looks ready to confront the count.

Dance: Minuet

All dance a Minuet, featuring groups of Vampires which include Chagal, Magda and Rebecca. Alfred and Abronsius join in, dancing together.

ABRONSIUS: Do not interfere, Alfred. Whatever happens! After the bite at sunrise, that’s our chance
ALFRED: Are you mad?

KROLOCK: WHEN YOU LIVE FOREVER
YOU GOTTA FEED YOUR HUNGRY HEART
BUT WILL IT EVER BE ENOUGH? VAMPIRES: YOU KNOW IT’LL NEVER BE ENOUGH

KROLOCK: EVERY TIME YOU THINK IT ENDS
IT’S JUST ANOTHER START
BUT WILL IT EVER BE ENOUGH?
VAMPIRES: YOU KNOW IT’LL NEVER BE ENOUGH

IT’S NOT ENOUGH, YOU KNOW WE’RE NEVER SATISFIED
WE WANT THE WORLD
WE’RE NEVER GONNA DIE
IT’S NOT ENOUGH TO EVER KEEP US PACIFIED

KROLOCK & VAMPIRES: EVERYTHING THAT THEY TELL US IS NOTHING BUT LIES
EVERYTHING THAT THEY SELL US IS NOTHING BUT BRIBES

KROLOCK: BUT THEY’RE IN FOR A SURPRISE
HER BLOOD IS READY RACING WILD AND FREE
LIQUID LIGHTNING!
LET IT RUN!
IT’S LIKE A CHOIR THAT’S ON FIRE
IN HER BODY
EXULTATE, EXULATE IT’S COME
NOW THE TIME HAS COME…

Sarah enters. Abronsius has to hold Alfred back. Vampires approach, too, but Krolock stops them short. The moon is seen beginning to eclipse.

VAMPIRES: YOU’RE SUCH A BEAUTY
FUSED WITH FIRE AND ICE
YOU MUST OFFER YOURSELF AS THE QUEEN OF THE NIGHT
IT’S YOUR CHOICE

YOU’RE SO EXQUISITE
YOU’LL BE FREE OF THE PAST
YOUR FUTURE UNBOUNDED
YOUR KINGDOM SO VAST

WILL YOU BECOME OUR GODDESS
AND BE WORSHIP AT LAST

OH WHAT A WONDERFUL BITE
FOREVER’S GONNA START TONIGHT
FOREVER’S GONNA START TONIGHT…

KROLOCK: ONCE UPON A TIME LIFE WAS SIMPLE AND BRIGHT
SARAH: NOW THERE’S ONLY LAYERS OF DARK
KROLOCK & SARAH: THERE’S NOTHING YOU CAN DO
A TOTAL ECLIPSE OF THE HEART…

The Vampires realise that only Abronsius and Alfred are reflected in the huge ballroom mirror.

ALFRED: Stop! In the name of all that is Holy!
KROLOCK: Seize them!
ALFRED: Evil Devil’s, suck on this!

Alfred grabs two candlesticks, forming a cross. This stops the vampires.

ABRONSIUS: In nomine argento Christ; Vesperate! In the silver name of Christ, go down like the sun in burning fire!

Abronsius pulls down a curtain. Sun rays pour in, consuming Krolock.

Scene TEN

The wilderness. Middle of the night. Full white moon. Wolves howl. Alfred and Sarah enter.

ALFRED: WE’VE SURVIVED THE DREAD
NOW I KEEP YOU IN MY ARMS
TILL THE MORNING SUNSHINE MELTS OUR FEARS AWAY
GOOD LOVE CAN’T GO BAD
THERE IS NOTHING THAT CAN HARM US
HAVING BATTLED THROUGH THE NIGHT
WE WILL WIN THE DAY
I’LL BE YOURS AND YOU’LL BE MINE
NEVER OUT OF LOVE
NEVER OUT OF MIND
WHAT A LOVELY START
WHAT A WAY TO END
WE WILL NEVER PART
BEYOND THE FOREST OVER THE HOLLOW
I KNOW A PLACE SO PEACEFUL AND JOYOUS
LEAD ME, I’LL FOLLOW

NOW WE CAN FLY LIKE THE ANGELS IN THE SACRED AIR
HIGHER AND HIGHER ABOVE THE WORLD AND ALL ITS CARES
EVERYBODY’S READY TO FLY
BUT THE STORMS NEVER SO VERY FAR
OUR LIVES ARE SHINING LIKE A STAR
AND SALVATIONS NEVER VERY FAR
SALVATIONS NEVER VERY FAR

We realise Sarah has vampire teeth

NOW WE CAN BE
SO MUCH BRAVER THAN WE EVER ARE
NOW WE CAN FLY…

Sarah bites Alfred as the music soars.

ALFRED (looking at something on his hand): What’s this?
SARAH: Blood, dear. Lick it up

He does.

ALFRED: It’s not bad…

Abronsius appears, triumphant.

ABRONSIUS: So much for the prophecy. Conquer the world, indeed! …

He disapears off, followed by a Vampiric Alfred.

Scene ELEVEN

SARAH: I’VE GOT A DREAM THAT A VAMPIRE IN A CASTLE
IS DYING AND IS DUST IN THE WIND
BUT HIS VISION WON’T BE ENDED
AND IT’S COMING TO PASS
THAT A NEW WORLD IS ABOUT TO BEGIN

I’VE GOT A DREAM THAT A BOY IN A CASTLE
WHO WOULD DIE JUST TO SAVE ME FROM SIN
SO YOUNG AND BEAUTIFUL AND INNOCENT TOO
HE KNEW THAT IN THE END
’TWAS I HAVE SAVED HIM

BUT I DON’T SEE ANY VAMPIRES IN THE CITIES
I DON’T HEAR THE UNHOLY CHOIR SING
AND IF I CAN’T GET A VAMPIRE I CAN STILL GET A BOY
AND A BOY WILL BE THE NEXT BEST THING
A BITE AWAY FROM THE FUTURE
A BOY WILL BE THE NEXT BEST THING…

By now the Vampires are everywhere on stage and in the auditorium.

VAMPIRES: GO BREAK A HEART OR YOUR HEART WILL BE BROKEN
GO BETRAY YOUR FRIEND OR ELSE BE BETRAYED
GRAB YOUR CHANCE BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE
IF YOU’RE FIGHTING, YOU MUST NOT BE AFRAID

BETTER TO BADDER, DEFEND OR BE BEATEN
USE YOUR ELBOWS OR GET JOSTLED YOURSELF
BETTER TO EAT THAN TO FIND YOU’VE BEEN EATEN
NO ONE CARES FOR YOU SO CARE FOR YOURSELF

NOW OUR LIFE IN THE DARKNESS IS OVER
AND WE’RE DANCING IN THE RINGS OF THE SUN
WE ARE SURE OF OUR GOALS
AND KNOW WHAT PATH WE MUST TAKE
WE DON’T LIVE
WE DON’T DIE
BUT WE ARE WIDE AWAKE
WE ARE IN MOTION
AND THE SOON THE WORLD WILL BE WON

BEFORE YOU KNOW IT’S BEGUN
SO ALL OF YOU OUT THERE WATCH OUT!
NOW WE’RE GONNA ADVANCE, WATCH OUT!
WE’VE GOT THE WORLD IN OUR HANDS – WATCH OUT!
YOU’RE GONNA SEE THE VAMPIRES DANCE
YOU’RE GONNA SEE THE VAMPIRES DANCE

LET THE REVELS BEGIN
LET THE FIRES BE STARTED
WE’RE DANCING FOR THE RESTLESS AND THE STEELY HEARTED
LET THE DEVILS COME IN
LET THE FIRES BE STARTED
WE’RE DANCING FOR THE RESTLESS AND THE PHONEY HEARTED

SAY A PRAYER IN THE DARKNESS
FOR THE MAGIC TO COME
NO MATTER WHAT IT SEEMS
TONIGHT IS WHAT IT MEANS TO BE YOUNG
TONIGHT IS WHAT IT MEANS TO BE YOUNG
BEFORE YOU KNOW IT’S GONE

WE’VE GOT A DREAM THAT THE DARKNESS IS OVER
AND WE’RE DANCING IN THE RINGS OF THE SUN
BUT IT’S ONLY A DREAM BUT TONIGHT IS FOR REAL
YOU’LL NEVER KNOW WHAT MEANS
BUT YOU KNOW HOW IT FEELS

WE ARE IN MOTION
AND THE SOON THE WORLD WILL BE WON
BEFORE YOU KNOW IT’S BEGUN
IT’S ALL WE REALLY GOT
TONIGHT
NOW WE’RE CRYING FOR BLOOD
TONIGHT
BEFORE YOU KNOW IT’S GONE
TONIGHT

TONIGHT IS WHAT IT MEANS TO BE YOUNG
TONIGHT IS WHAT IT MEANS TO BE YOUNG

LET THE REVELS BEGIN
LET THE FIRES BE STARTED
WE’RE DANCING FOR THE RESTLESS AND THE STEELY HEARTED
LET THE DEVILS COME IN
LET THE FIRES BE STARTED
WE’RE DANCING FOR THE RESTLESS AND THE PHONEY HEARTED
YOU’RE GONNA SEE THE VAMPIRES DANCE
WE’VE GOT THE WORLD IN OUR HANDS

SAY A PRAYER IN THE DARKNESS
FOR ALL THE MAGIC TO COME
NO MATTER WHAT IT SEEMS
TONIGHT IS WHAT IT MEANS TO BE YOUNG
YOU’RE GONNA SEE THE VAMPIRES DANCE
TONIGHT IS WHAT IT MEANS TO BE YOUNG
BEFORE YOU KNOW IT’S BEGUN

WE DRINK YOUR BLOOD AND THEN WE EAT YOUR SOUL
NOTHING’S GONNA STOP US, LET THE BAD TIMES ROLL

WE DRINK YOUR BLOOD
